OELWEIN - Louis John "Lou" Pirillo, 91, of Oelwein, passed away Monday, March 24, 2014 at Oelwein Health Care Center.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, March 29, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Oelwein with the Rev. David Ambrosy and Deacon Frank Easton officiating. Interment will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
Family will greet friends from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home, Oelwein, where a Knights of Columbus Rosary will be recited at 4:30 p.m. followed with military memorial service at 6:30 p.m. by Oelwein American Legion Ross Reid Post 9 Honor Guard, and a parish scripture service at 7:30 p.m.
In lieu of flowers a memorial fund has been established.

Lou was born Jan. 6, 1923 in Oelwein, Iowa to John A. and Antonia (Scorpiniti) Pirillo. He attended Oelwein public schools and graduated from Oelwein High School in 1940. He then attended Iowa Barber College in Des Moines, and barbered in Fairbank and Oelwein. He enlisted in the Navy in 1943 and attained the rating of Petty Officer SSM(B)2/C. After his discharge, he returned to Iowa and bought a barbershop in Fairbank. He later purchased the Temple Tap and Café in 1950 and managed the business until he sold it in 1955. Lou then entered the Real Estate business, working with Richard Smith and Harry Flower, in Oelwein.
Lou married Angela M. Leo on July 25, 1949 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein and they had three children. After Angela's death on Jan. 9, 1969, he then married Virginia C. Leo on July 19, 1969 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He purchased the Real Estate and Insurance business from Harry Flower in 1970 and managed the Lou Pirillo Real Estate and Insurance Corporation, with his wife, Virginia, until he sold the business to Don Jensen in 1988. He continued to work part-time with Don Jensen Realty until 2000, when he fully retired and spent his time golfing, fishing, and traveling.
Lou was a lifetime member of Sacred Heart Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus since 1941 and a member of the American Legion since 1942. During his working years, he belonged to the Oelwein Chamber of Commerce and Development Corporation, Backbone Board of Realtors, National Association of Realtors, Rotary Club, Moose Club, Elks Club, Am Vets, and served on the Oelwein Planning Commission from 1962 to 1989. In his retired years, he and his wife coordinated the annual Farragut Naval Station Reunions held in Oelwein and also chaired the Oelwein Italian-American Heritage Day for several years.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Virginia C. Pirillo, Oelwein; daughter, Luann Pirillo, Laguna Beach, Calif.; son, John Pirillo, Henderson, Nev.; and daughter, Emily Pirillo Cowdrick (Bob), Lilburn, Ga. He is also survived by 5 grandchildren, Angela Pirillo Guerena (Eric), Pagosa Springs, Colo.; Kara Cowdrick, Lilburn, Ga.; Katie Pirillo, San Diego, Calif.; Mia Pirillo, Laguna Beach, Calif.; and Kyle Cowdrick, Lilburn, Ga. He is also survived by sisters-in-law and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Antonia Pirillo, his first wife, Angela Pirillo, and two brothers, Dominic and Peter Pirillo.
