STERLING, Colo. - William Keith (Bill) Hemphill, of Sterling, Colo., passed away Friday, March 7, 2014 in Centennial, Colo., after a brief illness. He was 89.
He was born on a farm near Fontanelle, Iowa to the late J.W. and Ella Giles Hemphill. He joined brothers Don and Roy, and sister Hilma. After graduating from Fontanelle High School in 1940, he married Carol Bayman Hemphill on Dec. 27, 1949. They were married almost 47 years, until Carol's passing in 1996. To this union were born two children, David and Dee Ann.
After summer adventure hitch hiking across the US, and buying and selling a gas station, Bill worked for Iowa Electric Light and Power Company for almost 40 years. From a start of digging ditches, Bill eventually managed utilities in 11 cities for the company. He began in Greenfield, Iowa, and transferred to Oelwein and Muscatine, and finally was transferred to Sterling, Colorado in 1977, where he retired. He also became a bailiff in the Logan County Court system, assisting jurors and working on trials.
Bill was industrious in his volunteer efforts. Bill served as President of the Rocky Mountain Gas Association. He was involved in Rotary, Chambers of Commerce, Hospice of the Plains, the Elks and Shriners. He served on the Judicial Review Board in Sterling as well. He was a member of Faith United Methodist Church of Sterling. Bill loved golf and took pride in his beautiful lawns. But his solid work ethic and love for people led him to work for Eastern Colorado Services, where he procured work for disabled adults. He volunteered with Hospice, reading farm magazines aloud to farmers, so their wives could have some extra time.
Bill had a great sense of humor, and was also a great dad, grandfather, uncle, brother-in-law and friend. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sister, and his wife Carol.
Bill is survived by Dave (Cindy) Hemphill of Pensacola, Fla., Dee Ann (Pete) Torres of Centennial, Colo., and granddaughters Claire and Allison Hemphill of Pensacola, and grandsons Brian and William Torres of Centennial, Dr. Don Hemphill of California, brother and sister-in-law, Bill and Mary Lou Lamb of Greenfield, Iowa, devoted nieces and nephews and his dear friend, Helen Schwisow of Willis, Texas.
Services will be held 4 p.m. Saturday, March 15, at Tennant Funeral Home in Sterling.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Hospice of the Plains, 100 Broadway, Sterling, CO 80751, www.hospiceoftheplains.org.
