Irene L. Carey, 90, of Fayette, died on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2011 at the Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14, at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette with the Rev. James Brokman and the Rev. Dale Rausch officiating.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m., on Tuesday at the Jamison-Schmitz Funeral Home in Maynard, where there will be a Parish Rosary at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday evening. Visitation will also be one hour before the mass at the church on Wednesday with burial at Woodlawn Cemetery at Oelwein.
A Memorial Fund has been established in her name.

Irene Lillian Fortsch was born on Dec. 11, 1920, at Oelwein, the daughter of William and Ella (Meska) Fortsch. She graduated from Oelwein High School in Oelwein, in 1938. Irene married Francis James Carey on Nov. 30, 1939, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Oelwein. She was a homemaker, farm wife, and also worked at the Fayette County Farm Home in West Union. Irene was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Fayette and the Jolly Circle Club.
Irene is survived by six children: Michael (Joyce) Carey of Fayette, Dennis (Roselene) Carey of Oelwein, Richard (JoAnn) Carey of Shell Rock, Sue (Ray) Mahoney of Oelwein, Steve (friend-Shirley Fettkether) Carey of Westgate, Carol (Warren) Odekirk of Bloomington, Ill., 18 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, 5 great-great-grandchildren, a sister-in-law-Luella Carey of Waterloo, and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis J. Carey on Nov. 30, 1969; and a son, William Carey in 1951, eight sisters and two brothers.
