LAMONT - Joseph Miller was born Aug. 23, 1917, near Hazleton, Iowa, the son of Elmer and Magdalena Gingerich Miller. He attended the King School in Hazleton Township through eighth grade. Afterwards, he lived with Ross and Pearl Gallup.
Joseph was united in marriage to Marguerite DeWald on Jan. 27, 1942, at Fairbank. To this union were born: Ellen, Patricia, Lyle, Kathleen, Jayne and Carolyn. For a few months the couple lived in Waterloo, before Joe served with the U.S. Army during WWII. Upon his return, they lived in Littleton. He then re-entered the service during the Korean Conflict from 1950 to 1951.
Joe operated a bar in Littleton, before moving his family to Lamont. In 1947, he purchased and operated Miller's Tap for a total of 13 years in the bartending profession. Joe was also very pleased to sponsor Miller's Ball Team for many years. He loved going to those games and each of the players was very special to him.
After selling his business, he was a livestock buyer and drove livestock trucks for many years. Joe had a passion for gardening and enjoyed sharing his produce with family, friends, and neighbors. Joe and Marguerite's door was always open and over the years countless friends would stop in for food and drink and a good card game. That tradition carried on through his children and their children, and their children's children! With declining health in 2007, he moved to the East Towne Care Center in Independence.
At nearly 96 years of age, Joe entered into his eternal rest on Monday, May 20, 2013, at the East Towne Care Center.
