Tyler Goodin Obituary

We are celebrating the life of Tyler Fields Goodin after passing from this life and into eternal life on Thursday, January 10, 2013. Tyler was 33 years of age, having beat cancer twice in his young life.

Tyler was born on January, 8th 1980, in Aspen, Colorado, but loved Akron, having resided here since age 8. He was a leader in the community, especially in the Highland Square area where he owned his first home. He partook in many different organizations such as the Akron Cooking Coalition, Akron Radio Club, Critical Mass, and was instrumental in starting the Summit Cycling Center bike co-op.

He was a brilliant man with an array of talents. Tyler was known to be able to fix absolutely anything and got his start at the age of 21 at West Hill Hardware. He will be forever grateful to his mentors, Richard Tschantz, and his father, Rob Goodin. From there he evolved into a self-employed contractor and loved working on older homes in West Akron. Tyler's greatest passion was working with antique Vitrolite tile and was one of the very few people who specialized in this lost trade. Tyler was regarded as unique, hard working, insightful, and generous. He was loved by the community, and especially by his family and friends. His time off was spent touring the city and parks abroad on his many bicycles. If he was not riding he was fixing and customizing bikes for everyone to possibly convert them to his loved sport. His most faithful companion is Fritz, his dog. Tyler took Fritz with him everywhere he went.

He graduated from Old Trail Country Day School, then St. Vincent-St. Mary High School. He had a constant search and love for knowledge and never stopped learning.

Preceded in death were Tyler's grandparents, Daniel and Patricia Brennan from Akron, Ohio and Hamel and Laura Goodin from Cape Coral, Fla., and his uncle, Ernie Bender from Vail, Colorado.

Tyler is survived by his mother, Trish Goodin-Yard, his stepfather, Jack Yard, and his fiancée, Kristi Wall, with whom he had a very special relationship. He will be deeply missed by his aunts and uncles, Dan and Ann Brennan, Sean T. Brennan, Kim and Penti Tofferi, and Suzy Wotjkowiak, as well as his loving cousins, Sean and Amy Brennan, Matthew Brennan, Tim and Andrea Bender, and Jordan and Thaddeus Bender, and Jane Brennan and her daughters Brenna and Sydney.

Calling hours will be at Hummel Funeral Home at 500 E. Exchange St., Akron, on Friday, January 18, 2013 from 4 to 7 p.m., ending with a communal Rosary. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 11 a.m. on Saturday, January 19th at St. Hilary Catholic Church, at 2750 W. Market St., Fairlawn, Ohio, with interment at Rose Hill Cemetery following at 12:15 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Tyler's name, c/o Stewart's Caring Place, who helped Tyler during his battle with cancer. They can be mailed to 2955 W. Market St., Fairlawn, OH 44333. Please visit www.hummelcares.com to share a memory or leave a condolence.

Dear Trish,
I just heard about your loss and it pricked my heart. Now I see how God knows everything moves, and sent you Jack. I want to tell you something you gave me when I was in pain... and please read every single word and know it is sent with love: " Now to HIM who IS ABLE to do EXCEEDINGLY ABUNDANTLY ABOVE all that WE ASK or THINK, according to HIS power that works in us. To HIM be the GLORY in the Church by CHRIST JESUS and to all generations, FOREVER and EVER Amen." Ephesians 3:20.
Now, You must stand and carry on, because there is someone whom YOU can help, who is hurting and need the very special and talented and beautiful but most especially blessed Trish Goodin-Yard.
Peace of Jesus be with you and your family, and know that you are in my prayers and thoughts.
With Love,
Holly (Prasek) Jackson

I am very sorry for your loss Trish. My Grandma (Aunt Bee) and I send our love and prayers and are sorry we couldn't be there. I remember one of the family reunions when Tyler and I were both very young, he was hanging out in our hotel room and we built the most amazing fort out of the chairs, tables and sheets. Fun memories of a spirited young man! He will be missed.

My family has known Tyler since he went to high school with my daughter. He was so bright and hilarious! He always had that impish "plotting" teenage smile.

Encountering him now and then as a young man, he seemed more quiet and thoughtful...perhaps due to the struggle with his health. He never mentioned that.

He was always very friendly though. He always had a genuine "glad to see you" expression on his face.

He always seemed to be contemplating something behind that smile too.

You knew you were in the presence of a genius and a friend.

It was a treat to run into him...at West Hill hardware...stopped at a corner on his bike...at the Square.

My kids admired him for his brilliance, his originality, and his sense of humor.

We will all miss his presence in this world.

Tyler, you were a great friend through one of the most troubling parts of my life. i learned a lot from you and looked up to you. one of the best times i ever had was scavenging through an old apartment building, looking for door nobs and locks. I thought you were crazy, then you were the only person who could fix my aunts door out of 5 different contractors. then i thought you were smart, lol. you let me crash on your couch for months, always looked out for me. i am at a loss. you were one of my only true friends. our conversations and your posts will be missed.i cant stop crying. but i know you would tell me it was alright. i love you Tyler. im sorry you had so much pain bro. you didnt deserve it. you were a good man. you were my friend. you will always be remembered. RIP

I want to express my sympathies for your recent loss. I met Tyler many years ago and was impressed by the knowledge and passion he shared about Vitrolite tile. Recently, I had a job that needed such expertise...I was determined to find him and was successful in locating him! Tyler responded to my needs and my clients with his talent and gentle demeanor. I want to say that he was wonderful to work with and I appreciated him jumping into our project with the same knowledge and passion I remembered. Your son Tyler was a priveledge to know. My thoughts and prayers are with your family and friends.
Sincerely,

Mary C. Carlson

Dear Members of Tyler's Family,
I was saddened to read of Tyler's death. Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of such a special young man.
I first met Tyler many, many years ago at West Hill Hardware, and met some of your family at the cancer fundraiser. It was a joy to take part in that special event!
Tyler worked on my condo and the home of my late mother, (where he admired her beautiful white vitrolite
origional windowsills). He was a true "problem solver". He always brought a smile to our faces, and she remembered him with fondness. The last time I saw Tyler, he was SO excited about his house in Highland Square!
I hope and pray that, just hearing how so many others have special memories of this quiet, funny, helpful young man, brings you comfort and peace of mind in your sorrow.

Please accept our sincere sympathy at this sad time. It is amazing how another life can briefly touch ours but the memory lasts a life time. We met Tyler years ago at West Hill Hardware. We had questions about how to fix a faucet. Instead of answering them, he came to our home and fixed it for us! We had to insist that he accept payment. His quiet, friendly, gentle and helpful personality reminded us of our son Scott who had gone to heaven a few years before. We have thought of him from time to time and wondered how he was. Now we know. Our prayers are with his family and friends. May knowing Tyler is safe in the love and joy of heaven bring you comfort and peace. God bless.
