Broers, Catherine "Nan" - Akron
Catherin "Nan" Broers In the early morning of February 25th, Catherine Broers (Nan) passed peacefully in her Florida home with family in attendance. Her strong and lifelong religious beliefs allowed her to trust in her Saviour throughout life and address the end absent of fear. Nan was born in Akron, Ohio on July 26,1919 to Ruth and John Christie. She married S. Jim Broers during the war and they enjoyed 58 years of life in Akron before making FL their year round home in 2000 followed shortly thereafter by Jim's passing. Nan grew up in Akron and graduated from Buchtel High in a class that remained predominantly in Akron as lifetime friends. She helped organize and entertain their 50th reunion and I am sure is relishing re-joining their spirits. She went on to develop her art and design skills at Stonleigh College and later in life enjoyed painting nature using acrylics and watercolors. While raising four children, she put in many thousands of hours volunteering for Akron General Hospital working the gift store and the welcome desk. She loved gardening and flower arranging and pursued that interest as a member of the Akron Garden Club and Diggers & Weeders. She was also a member of the Junior League of Akron. Her passion for children and her faith in the Lord led her to over 50 years or worship at St.Paul's where she and her husband taught Sunday school. Later she became a member of St. Paul's in Delray Beach, FL until physically unable to attend. Caring for children also led her to tutoring kids with learning disabilities at Firestone Park. Because her husband was an avid golfer, she took up golf and played as a member of Portage C.C., Quail Ridge C.C. and The Little Club. Together they took up bridge and enjoyed frequently playing and studying the game. Nan played into her late 80's until her eyesight failed. But, she drew the line when it came to skiing and adopted the position of Lodge mother for family and friends. What she lacked in equipment she made up in skiing apparel. She got everyone going and watched from the lodge to heap on the praise at lunch and dinner. Always the consummate mother, Nan devoted her life to her four children, Christie, Jim, Nancy, and Becky. And later it was the grandchildren Kendall, Blaire, Jordan, and Eliza that she loved and nurtured as she introduced them to art in a basement studio, cooking, games, and nature explorations. She is survived by her children and their spouses (Dennis, Missie, Chuck, and Patrick) and grandchildren and their spouses (Andy, Ben, and Dominique) and sister Chris Chenoweth (Richard) and nephew Rick Tomkinson and neice Betsy Getz. There will be a private family celebration of life in Akron this spring. In memory of Nan it is reqested you honor her by continued support of your church or favorite charity.
