Arlene Margaret (Mueller) Kern(1923 - 2014)

Arlene Margaret Kern (nee Mueller)

Arlene Margaret Kern (nee Mueller) passed away on April 19, 2014 with her loving family by her side.

She was born on August 28, 1923 in Menasha, Wisconsin, and was a resident of Norton for 57 years.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Lawrence, to whom she enjoyed 65 years of marriage; parents, John F. and Mabel V. Mueller; brothers, Ralph (Dorothy) Mueller, John Mueller; and sister, Patricia (William) Pagel.

She leaves behind her daughter, Terri Pouliot (Mark) and son, Keith Kern. A huge void will be felt by her grandchildren she leaves behind: Tracy Sheppard (Sean), Bettie Jo Christie, Jamie Madigan (Tina) and Jason Kern (Teresa). Arlene also leaves behind 15 great-grandchildren who adored her. She was very close to each of them and loved being involved in their lives and spending time with them. She also had the rare privilege of having one great-great-grandchild.

Arlene was a World War II Veteran and proud member of Coast Guard SPARS. She was an active member of the North Coast WAVES. She was also a lifetime member of the VFW in Norton. Arlene counted it a privilege to serve her country in its time of need.

Arlene was devoted to her family and found so much joy in spending time with each of them. She especially loved preparing huge family meals at holiday times or family celebrations. She always insisted on hosting such family gatherings, even as her family grew. She loved cooking and baking and enjoyed time in the kitchen trying out that new recipe.

Arlene was very active in her church, The Columbia Church of Christ in Barberton and was an original member of the Dorcas Class. Her giving and unselfish spirit was evident in the volunteer work she did with the area's Soup Kitchens as well as serving church dinners when the need arose. She gave of her time freely and asked nothing in return. Arlene was truly a member of 'The Greatest Generation' and her spirit and energy was paralleled to none. She was a dedicated wife and mother as well as grandmother. There was nothing she would not do to make the lives of others easier. She was a loyal friend to so many and always looking for ways to lend a helping hand. She often visited nursing homes to take small gifts or flowers to brighten the day of a friend or someone less fortunate.

Arlene loved dancing when her husband was alive and was a lifetime member of the Country Music Association. Together they knew how to attract attention as they were always admired for the way they danced together. She also enjoyed cruises and traveling on the ocean. Arlene remained active up until her last days; enjoying early mornings spent at the Barberton YMCA, where she enjoyed swimming, the treadmill, stepper or rowing machine. She was admired by everyone for her pep and stamina. She quickly made a group of friends there who referred to her as 'The Youngster', because she was so fit and active. She also stayed active in the Wadsworth Alzheimer's Support group long after her husband's long suffering from the disease. She made friends wherever she went and she loved being around people. She leaves behind many of those friends who will especially feel her absence.

Arlene was a joy-filled Christian woman in every sense of the word. She was considered the family 'peace-keeper' and unconditionally loved everyone, never judging anyone. She always chose to see the good side of everyone and everything.

Arlene's earthly presence will be greatly missed. She was a remarkable woman with so many interesting stories to tell. She lived an amazing life, creating so much love and joy in the lives she touched. She never met a stranger and was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. An empty space in our hearts has been created that will never be filled by another. We will wrap ourselves in the warmth of beautiful memories she created that will be treasured forever.
