Gail Bertsch(1941 - 2018)

Gail Vassalotti Bertsch

Gail Vassalotti Bertsch, 77, of North Falmouth, Mass., died on September 4, 2018, at Wareham Healthcare in Wareham, Mass., of complications due to Alzheimer's.

Gail was born in Cambridge, Mass., in 1941, the only daughter of Virginia H. and Louis J. Vassalotti. She grew up in Newton Lower Falls, spent her summers at New Silver Beach and as a teenager, moved to Akron, Ohio, graduating from Buchtel High there in 1959. She attended the University of Akron where she was an active member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority and where she met her husband, George Henry "Hank" Bertsch III. Gail graduated from the University of Akron in 1963 and married Hank Bertsch the following year. She taught elementary school before moving with her husband during his career. After having two children, Amy and Guy Bertsch, she returned to the classroom as a substitute teacher in Old Tappan, N.J., and as a educational aide in Doylestown, Pa., and in Mashpee, Mass., last working at K.C. Coombs. She loved helping kids, particularly those with learning disabilities and other challenges, learn how to read. In retirement, Gail and her husband traveled extensively and spent the winter months in Port Charlotte, Fla., but she was always happy to return to New Silver Beach.

Gail was an extremely kind and fun woman who enjoyed welcoming family, friends and neighbors to her home. She loved children and animals, especially her own dogs, and she was an enthusiastic fan of Boston sports teams. Gail was a member of North Falmouth Congregational Church where in 2014, she and Hank renewed their marriage vows for their 50th wedding anniversary.

Gail's parents and her only brother, Guy Louis Vassalotti, predeceased her, as did her goddaughter Liza Donohue. She is survived by her husband, Hank of North Falmouth; her daughter, Amy and her wife Robyn Nichols of Alexandria, Va.; her son Guy and his wife Lisa, of Portland, Maine, and her granddaughter, Guy and Lisa's daughter Zoe, also of Portland. Gail also leaves several cherished nieces and nephews and many beloved cousins and dear friends.
