Gilbert P. Chaney, Sr., born October 29, 1922 in Gormania, Maryland to Charles and Beatrice Chaney, being the last surviving child, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 10, 2013 at Hospice of Summa in Akron.
Gib was preceded in death by his loving wife of 60 years, Marjorie C. Chaney and sons John M. Chaney and Glen W. Chaney. He is survived by his sons, Gilbert P. Chaney, Jr., Charles S. (Jill) Chaney, and Michael P. Chaney; daughters, Christine M. (Mike Baker) Chaney and Patricia A. (William) Armstrong; 20 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
He served in World War II
as a paratrooper and scout in the 517th PRCT, Company B. where he saw action in Italy, the Dragoon Invasion of Southern France and the Battle of the Bulge in Belgium. Serving his country he received a Purple Heart
, Presidential Unit Citation (Soy-Hotton, Belgium), American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three Bronze Service Stars, World War II Victory Medal, French Croix de Guerre (for Dragoon Invasion), and Belgian Croix de Guerre (for Battle of the Bulge).
As Gilbert is laid to rest, our prayer is that our men and women serving our country in many facets today and those who have served in the past know how proud of them we are.
Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, May, 14, 2013 at the Donovan Funeral Home, 17 Southwest Ave. (On the Historic Tallmadge Circle) with Pastor Paul Wides officiating. Interment will be at Greenlawn Memorial Park in Akron, where military rites will be conducted by Mogadore VFW
