Harriett "Jane" (Oldham) Hawkes

Harriett "Jane" Oldham Hawkes, 90, of Asheville, N.C., passed away on Tuesday, March 5, 2013 surrounded by loved ones.

She was born in Akron, Ohio on January 5, 1923 to the late Roy and Mary (Schwartz) Oldham. Jane was a devoted mother, grandmother and wife; avid history buff and bird watcher.

Jane was a graduate of East High school in Akron and The University of Akron. Jane married Joseph Hawkes in 1942. Joe's employment with Goodyear took them to many different states supporting the war effort: Los Angeles, Calif.; New Bedford, Conn.; and Gadsden, Ala. Their love of Ohio brought them back to Silver Lake where Jane was a devoted homemaker, mother and student, returning to school to obtain a degree in history. At age 60, Jane was determined to be closer to her children and grandchildren and followed them to Tuscaloosa, Ala.; Savannah, Ga.; Asheville, N.C. and Atlanta, Ga. Jane's most valiant fight was against MS, having lived with the progressive illness for over 40 years, most of those independently. She was an inspiration to others.

Jane was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Hawkes; son, Joseph Hawkes III; and brother, John "Bud" Oldham. She will be deeply missed by her children, Linda Jones of Asheville and Alan (Kimberly) Hawkes of Columbus, Ohio. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Jessica, Shelley, and Warren Jones; and one great-grandchild, Cody Jones.

A private service was held by the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the MS Society.
