Captain Joseph L. Adelman
Captain Joseph L. Adelman, USN (Ret), passed away December 15, 2013 after a brief illness.
An Akron native, he was the son of Louis Adelman and Mary Grace Kettren Adelman of Akron. Captain Adelman is survived by his wife, Mavis. He is also survived by his former wife, Katharine McCaskey; five children; twelve grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Captain Adelman was a graduate of St. Vincent High School in Akron and the United States Naval Academy. After graduation from St. Vincent, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy
and served at sea during the early years of World War II
. After several years, Captain Adelman was appointed to the Naval Academy. During 35 years of naval service, he was posted to nine ships and commanded two submarines (USS Cod and USS Catfish). He also served on the staff of numerous U.S. Navy and NATO commands, specializing in undersea warfare. He was decorated numerous times for meritorious services. In addition to his degree from Annapolis, Captain Adelman earned two masters degrees. After his retirement he was awarded a doctorate in history from King's College, University of London.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Vincent's Church, 164 West Market Street, Akron, on Wednesday, December 18, 2013, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow after the service at the Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman.
