NEW FRANKLIN -- Mildred "Millie" Eaken, 93, was joyously reunited with her husband Wayne "Bud" early Monday morning after a long illness. She passed one month shy of her 94th birthday in Youngstown surrounded by her loved ones. Millie is survived by her son, Edward (Ed) of Columbiana; sister, Irene Gratz of Kirtland; beloved friend, Rhonda Didado of Green; and many nieces and nephews. She was the daughter of the late Terez and Joseph Zelei, who immigrated from Hungary to Barberton, Ohio. Millie was preceded in death by her husband, Wayne "Bud"; brothers, Steven, Charles, Leslie and Joseph; and sisters, Teresa Greening and Helen Toneff.
She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, where she volunteered for many years in the school cafeteria. Millie had a keen interest in both aviation and space, having served in the Army
Air Corps during World War II and later learning to fly. She worked at the Akron-Canton Airport as an assistant to the airport manager and also participated in the woman's branch of the National Aeronautics Association and the Astronomy Club of Akron. Millie passed her love of aviation on to her beloved son, Ed who also became a pilot and earned a B.S. Degree in Aeronautics at Kent State.
The family wishes to express its extreme gratitude to Rhonda and Gary Didado of J.W. Didado Electric in Akron, who tirelessly loved and cared for Millie in her later years.
