Reginald J. "Reggie" Garnett, 38, passed away Tuesday, December 25, 2012.
Reggie was born October 15, 1974 in Akron, Ohio to Robert and Ruby Garnett. He was a product of Akron Public Schools graduating from John R. Buchtel High School in 1993. He was an artist and all-around athlete excelling in football, baseball, basketball, golf, track and field, and swimming. His first love was football. He became a Parade Magazine All-American, USA Today Honorable Mention All-American, Listed 4th in the Detroit Free Press on Best of the Midwest List, and was named Lineman of the year on the Associated Press Division II All-Ohio Team both his Junior and Senior years in high school.
Reggie earned a full athletic scholarship to Michigan State University
, majoring in Communication. He earned recognition each of his four years at MSU such as Big Ten Freshman of the Year, first to ever start as a freshman under the George Perles era, Butkus Award Candidate, and All Big Ten Candidate starting 39 out of 41 games in his career.
He went into the National Football League Combine and was picked up as a free agent by the Carolina Panthers. Due to injury, his NFL career was cut short. Reggie went back to school continuing his education at Wayne State University in Secondary Education.
He was a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Inc., the Michigan State University Alumni Association, and the Michigan State University Football Alumni Association.
Reggie resided in Michigan for 19 years spending the last 12 years in Detroit where he started his own investment company, NORKA Properties and Investments LLC. When the economy took a turn, Reggie worked as a Loan Consultant, Head Start Instructor, Office Manager, Territory Manager and his last job was with Workforce Network as a Site Supervisor.
Reggie was preceded in death by Grandparents, Abraham and Anna Lee Garnett; Aunts, Elma Jones, Jacqueline Andrus, and Yolanda Garnett; and Uncle, Robert "Bob" Nash.
He is survived by his son, Reginald J. "Lil Reg" Garnett II; parents, Robert J. and Ruby Garnett; brother, Robert J. Garnett II; and sister, Robin J. Garnett; aunts, Theresa (Jesse) Dardie and Janet Burt; uncles, Joey Garnett, Edgar Nash, and James (Charlene) Nash; and a host of cousins and friends.
Services will be held on Saturday, January 5, 2013 at 12 p.m. at The House of the Lord, 1650 Diagonal Rd., Akron, OH 44320, Rev. Dr. Luther Cooper Officiating and Rev. Dr. Ronald Fowler eulogizing. Interment at Mt. Peace Cemetery. Friends may visit at the church from 11 a.m. until the time of service. Procession will form at The House of the Lord.
