Dr. Robert Denman (Denny) Thompson Jr., age 76, of Shaker Heights, Ohio died peacefully on April 29, 2013.
He is survived by Carolyn Thompson (Pennig), his beloved wife of nearly 50 years; daughter, Jennie Thompson, son-in-law, John Stellabotte; grandchildren, Sophia and Nicholas Stellabotte (NY, NY), and sisters, Nan and Jean Thompson (Delray Beach, Florida.)
The son of Lois and Denny Thompson of Akron, Ohio, Denny Jr. was born in 1936. He graduated from Princeton University
in 1958 with a degree in Chemistry and earned his Doctor of Medicine from Columbia University in 1962. He completed his post-graduate training in Internal Medicine and Nephrology at University Hospitals of Cleveland.
From 1964-66, he served in the U.S. Air Force in Georgia as a Physician assigned to Strategic Air Command. He then devoted five decades of his professional life to caring for the medical needs of others: as an Attending Physician at University Hospitals of Cleveland, where he co-founded an end-stage renal program, as a Clinical Professor of Medicine at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and in his private practice of Internal Medicine and Nephrology in the Cleveland area.
Outside of office hours, Denny also devoted his spare time to the service of others. For over 40 years, he was on the Board of Trustees of the Centers for Dialysis Care, where he was a founding member in 1972 and served as Chairman from 2004-2006. Also, he was President of the Northern Ohio Alumni Association of Princeton University from 2007-2011. Beginning in 2009, he served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of University Suburban Health Center (University Hospitals.)
His hobbies and passion include golf, music, opera, fine wine and travel to Europe. Beginning in 2006, Denny was named Maitre for the "Commanderie de Bordeaux a Cleveland."
