CUYAHOGA FALLS -- Walter P. Backlund, 90, passed away Feb. 26, 2013.
Mr. Backlund was born in Akron and had resided in Cuyahoga Falls for over 55 years. He had worked as a tire builder for B. F. Goodrich, served as an Akron Firefighter
at Station #7 from 1951 to 1974 and had served as a sergeant with the U.S. Army in World War II
at the Battle of Normandy. He was a member of the Akron Area Retired Fireman and Widows Assoc., had bowled with the Akron Firefighters Bowling Team, had been head coach for the Falls Parks and Rec Football and Baseball Teams and had been president of the Kent Public Schools Special Education PTA.
Preceded in death by his wife, Betty A. and two sisters and two brothers, he is survived by his children, David of Honolulu, Hawaii, Deborah (Martin) Rourke of Dracut, Mass., and Denis (Laura) of Barberton; grandchildren, Marty-Paul Rourke, Meaghan Rourke and Derek Backlund; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Glenn Norman of N. Canton; and many nieces and nephews.
Friends may call beginning at 5 p.m. Monday, March 4 in Clifford-Shoemaker Funeral Home, 1930 Front St., Cuyahoga Falls until a funeral service at 7 p.m. Monday, Dr. Richard A. Hasler officiating and the Last Alarm will be conducted by Akron Area Retired Firefighters and Widows Assoc. Final resting place, Chestnut Hill Memorial Park.
