Frank Martin Obituary

Frank Phillip Martin went home to our Lord on December 20, 2011 after a brief battle with cancer.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pa., in 1937, he served in the U.S. Air Force and was stationed in Korea. Phil worked for the U.S. Weather Service for 40 years at the Akron Canton Airport. Some may remember his weather broadcasts from WHBC. He taught climatology part-time at The University of Akron in his retirement. He had earned both a bachelor's and a master's degree at The University of Akron where he became an avid Zips sports fan. Phil was also a PhD candidate at Kent State University. He volunteered throughout the years at the Furnace Street Mission and the Haven of Rest.

Phil is survived by Sylvia Parsons Martin, his wife of 51 years. He is also survived by his children, Kathleen (David) Wells and Pastor Mike (Jenny) Martin; and grandchildren, Ryan and Morgen Wells, and Hannah, Haley, Hope and Josh Martin.

Friends are welcomed to a memorial service at 6 p.m., Monday, December 26, 2011, Summit Christian Church, 133 S. Hawkins Ave., in Akron. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Summit Christian Church. Please visit the guestbook at www.hummelcares.com.

I first met Phil when I was about 15 years old and he left a lasting impression. He was a kind man who was a passionate fan. Phil will be missed by all of his fellow fans at Zipsnation.org.

It's always sad to learn of the passing of one of our fellow Air Force friends that went through basic at Sampson AFB. We created a common bond on the Sampson website.
Phil Martin was a friend to all of us. His posts & comments will be sorely missed. God bless you, Phil Martin
