Ernest Poor Obituary

Ernest Anton Poor

Ernest Anton Poor, age 85, died peacefully on the evening of July 17, 2010, surrounded by his family.

He was born in Medina, and lived most of his life in Springfield Township. Ernie was a man who lived life to the fullest and invited all to enjoy it with him. He was known to all for his quick wit, loyal friendship and generosity.

Ernie graduated from Springfield High School in 1943, and enlisted in the Army Air Corps. Following the war, he enrolled at the University of Akron and obtained a degree in education. His teaching career began in Boston Township where he was employed as a math teacher, football, basketball and baseball coach. He taught for Mogadore Schools and the Akron Public Schools, teaching at Ellet High school. A master carpenter, Ernie transferred to Central Hower where he taught carpentry until his retirement in 1980. Following retirement, Ernie established E. Poor Construction, employing his sons, nephews and in-laws, a crew unlike any other.

Ernie loved following Cleveland sports, fishing, tennis, shuffleboard, cards, making his legendary Hungarian sausage and enjoying an occasional cold one with family and friends. Ernie's true passion was his family. He married his high school sweetheart, Helen Alhand, in 1945, celebrating 65 years of marriage this past May. He delighted in the pursuits of his children and grandchildren. Going to Grandpa's house meant it was time to play.

Preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth, and younger brother, John; he is survived by his loving wife, Helen; sons, Ernie (Curtis), John (Liza), and Rod (Lisa); daughters, Tammy (Chuck) Billington, and Kristy (Jerry) Ursetti; grandchildren, Chaz, Kyle, Josh, Vince, Tony, Kara, Angela, Hallie and Jenna; and brother, Elmer. His memory will live on as his stories are told and retold for years to come.

Funeral services will be held Thursday 11 a.m. at Hopkins Lawver Funeral Home, 547 Canton Road, Akron, with Rev. Jeff Gindlesberger officiating. Entombment at Hillside Mausoleum. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday 5 to 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Lakemore United Methodist Church, 1536 Flickinger Road, Akron, 44312. I'll never forget when Mr.Poor asked two of us Carpenters to deliver the little toys Helen made for Children's Hospital.I recall even now how sentimental I felt after seeing the nurses smile and say Thank You.
Furthermore his Van was a Coaches Clinic at 7:30 A.M. when I engaged in my first official season of Coaching Pee Wee Football.
Coach Seigferth was more then correct when stating many people too many too name were directly responsible for the successes of Central-Hower Basketball and remembering he and Mr.Clark entertained three former students as Coaches and Preachers whom sat in his office the day before the State Championship was won.
Rough bitter boys in the turbulent times of the Vietnam War remember the psychologist he was with his humor and that one liner "We can fix it!"
Thanks Ernie !!!!!

So sorry to hear of Mr. Poor's passing.
He was such an influence on so many young men. I'll never forget "Stick with the math boys, leave the girls alone!"
If I had only listened.
RIP Mr Poor

I see Ernie and Dad now enjoying an awesome game of tennis - Ernie of course is at the net switching his racquet between hands and smiling like a Cheshire cat - he is a wonderful example of living life to the fullest as he still is doing but at a different level. With love to the entire Poor family!
