Samuel Caplowe Obituary

June 3, 1916

Dear Friends, Sam passed away on December -23-2011, he was 95. He joins his wife Mildred of 71 years who passed away on September 5th, 2011. He leaves behind his three loving daughters and sons-in-law, Rabbi Adi Caplowe and husband Joseph Felder; granddaughter, Ariana Rabinovitch and her husband Adam; and great-grandchild, Julia, Dr. Carol Caplowe, DO, Family Medicine, and grandson, Aaron Caplowe, and Susan Caplowe MSW and Dan Hendrickson, and his cherished care giver and friend, Rozia Laine.

Dr. Sam was from Connecticut. He served as an Army Medic in World War II, in the Pacific, and was awarded two Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart for his heroic saving of lives. He once spent ten hours down below a badly bombed Navy ship administering life saving emergency care while he himself was wounded. His efforts to alleviate suffering and prevent further loss of life were praised by both Army and Navy officials. He was with Ernie Pyle about a half hour before the war reporter was killed while out on another detail.

Upon returning home from the war, Daddy set up his medical practice in Wadsworth, Ohio and he and Mildred began raising a family. He took his civic responsibility seriously. He was a leader in the Kiwanis Club, Jewish Family Federation and so often provided free services to patients in need who couldn't pay. In exchange Daddy would receive the most wonderfully baked goods or handmade furniture- he welcomed someone's craft as payment.

The last seven years of Daddy's life were spent with the onset of dementia and some physical problems. He finally let go of life and is now at peace.

Dad and mom met when she was 18. A friend of dad’s fixed them up on a blind date. Mom’s sisters fixed her up with too much makeup and dad was running away fast. This friend convinced dad to come to the house for Shabbat. She was sitting on the floor going through her vinyl records just being herself. Dad was struck by the Thunder Bolt of love. They had a secret wedding way before a formal wedding. It is so wonderful that they were each other’s first loves and that this picture is on the web forever. We all still miss them and know they are still together.

Dear Carol, my deepest sympathy to you, Adrienne and Susan. I am Marilyn Miller Gordon daughter of Mort and Helen Miller from Wadsworth. I have fond memories of Doc and Mildred. I babysat with you girls and even went to Connecticut one summer as your "nanny" of sorts.. Our parents were good friends as members of the small Jewish community here in Wadsworth. My parents are both gone now also. Thinking of you and your families.

I wish I had the chance to meet you, but feel I do know you through your daughter, Susie Caplowe. I first met her when I was elected to the Florida House of Representatives. She came to my office expressing congratulations and looking for a place to store her briefcase and papers. We became great friends over all these years working together and you and your wife surely taught her well. She is a wonderful person and her talents and philosophy as a person have to be inherited from you. I know you will be missed, but I will share a part of you everytime I meet with Susie.

Susie, I have so many great memories of your family from high school. Your family reached out and provided a great home for your friends to come to. That is so special!! It was so great that your mother was able to chapperone our trip to Europe. When Mr. Cooper was not able to make it at the last moment, I think it was your mother who stepped up and decided to chapperone.

My sympathies to the family of Dr. Caplowe. After hearing so many wonderful things about him over the years, I'm so sorry I never got to meet him.

It has been a pleasure and privilege to work with Mildred's and Sam's daughter Susie Caplowe for many years. Susie's intelligence, knowledge, work ethic, skills, talents, compassion, and humor are extraordinary. The fine qualities of Mildred and Sam live on in Susie.

With warm regards,

Karen

Adi, Carol, and Susan,
I'm sorry to hear about you parents. Adi, the last time I saw you mom was at a Boca Pops concert when she took the trouble to come back stage and ask if I was the same Joy Gaston from Wadsworth that her daughter knew. What a surprise! May God bless you all in this trying time.

Thank you all for your kind words. My grandparents were wonderful people and it means a lot to see others felt the same way. I learned so much from them I don't even know where to begin.

I am sorry for your loss, and I want you to know that I will be praying for strength, peace, and comfort for you and your family. I had your mother as a teacher at WHS, and I can remember walking with my Grandmother to your father's office above Fixler's. You should be very proud of both of your parents they were great people and will never be forgotten.
