Alma Mercer Obituary
(nee Roach)
TWINSBURG Alma R. Mercer (nee Roach), 82, a lifelong Twins burg resident, died Thursday, July 31, 2003, at Akron General Hospital.
She was the 1933 Akron Beacon Journal Spelling Bee Champion and went on to win the National Spelling Bee Championship, which helped her pay for her education. She became a teacher, and retired from Solon Middle School in 1983. She then became a volunteer for many organizations.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William S. Mercer, and brother, Larry Roach. She is survived by daughters, Stacey Ann (Allen Reid) Sparks of Boonsboro, Md., Barbara Lee (Donald) Murray of Minneapolis, Minn.; grandchildren, Kaitlin Irene Sparks, Colton Reid Sparks; sisters-in-law, Barbra Anne Roach, Shirley Paley; nieces, Leslie (Brian) Bowers, Laurel (Jo seph) Armao, Susan Paley.
A memorial service will be held Monday, Aug. 4, 2003, 3:30 p.m., at the First Congregational Church of Twinsburg, 9050 Church St., Twinsburg, Ohio. Friends will be received at Johnson-Romito, a Golden Rule Funeral Home (corner of Route 91 and Post Road), Twins burg, Ohio (330-425-2244), TO DAY from 3 to 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Living Memorial Fund at church, or the Twinsburg Historical Society.
