Edward "Lew" Kunkel |
Edward "Lew" Kunkel passed away September 18, 2013 after a brief illness.
He was born March 16, 1919 in Pittsburgh Pennsylva nia and resided in Cuyahoga Falls since 1960. He retired from the M. O'Neil Company after 26 years of service as a fur buyer. He was a retired Major in the U.S. Army Reserves in the Cleveland area. Lew was a musician for over 70 years playing bass guitar with several Dixieland bands and then formed his own band, "That's Lew's Jazz". He was a charter member of St. Eugene's Catholic Church where he was a member of the Holy Name Society, was a head usher and past Secretary of Parish Council. He was a member of VFW 1062 Ralph Huff Post in Cuyahoga Falls. In retirement he loved his vegetable garden and was known for growing the best tomatoes. He had a hobby of cultivating new friends, and was a member of the Early Jazz Club, the Retired Officers Association and the Summit Sportsman Club.
Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Kay; and grandson, Bradley. Lew is survived by daughters, Kathi (Nelson) Michalak and Debbie Miller; son, Jim Kunkel; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Friends may call Sunday 2 to 5 p.m. at Ciriello and Carr Funeral Home, 810 Portage Tr. in Cuyahoga Falls. Mass of Christian Burial 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23 at St. Eugene's Catholic Church, followed by interment at Holy Cross Cemetery.
