James P. O'Neill

September 16, 1922 - June 25, 2018

James P. O'Neill, of University Park, Florida, passed away at his home peacefully in his sleep on June 25, 2018.

Born September 16, 1922 in Cleveland, Ohio, he graduated from Shaker High School in 1940 and went on to Miami University in Oxford, OH.

He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity and continued as a life-long supporter. With World War II breaking out in 1941, he enlisted in the United States Navy Officers Training program and, upon completion, he served in the Pacific Theater as an Assault Communications Officer in various operations, ending his tour of duty in post-war China.

Upon his discharge in 1946, he returned to his studies at Miami University under the GI Bill and obtained a degree in Business, graduating in 1948. He married his college sweetheart, Mary Elanor Harp in 1950 and worked as a manager of a Cleveland insurance company office until 1957, when he assumed the position of Sales Manager for the Flood Company of Hudson, Ohio, later becoming Vice President in charge of sales, a position in which he traveled globally. He was an avid golfer and a long-time member of the Sharon Country Club in Medina, Ohio.

His first wife, Mary Harp O'Neill, passed away in 1978. He is survived by his son, James T. O'Neill of Ozark, Missouri; his niece, Mary Ellen Lantz, and nephew, James Edward Duncan, both of Akron, Ohio; his daughter, Martha O'Neill Duncan predeceasing him.

He later married Vera Snyder Cogan, a noted and well-respected Akron City School System educator and administrator. After retiring from the Flood Company in 1989, and upon Vera's retirement, they traveled extensively, visiting many countries in their travels and settling in University Park, Florida, where they enjoyed an active social life. Vera passed away in 2017. A wonderful father and husband, friend to many, he will be greatly missed by all. He will be laid to rest September 15, 2018 at the Bath Township Cemetery in Bath, Ohio, with a wake to follow. A celebration of life will be held in University Park, Florida at a later date to be announced.
