Julia Lynn Slocum Obituary
Julia Lynn

Slocum

Julia was born on July 27, 1997, to Richard Robert and Eva Katherine (Bertsch) Slocum of Peninsula, Ohio. She died unexpectedly but peacefully in her sleep on August 20, 2018.

Julia loved life, careening into each new day. She was born with Apert Syndrome, which required dozens of corrective surgeries, but Julia was always eager for each one. She loved as family the capable nurses of Akron Children's Home Care who attended her throughout her childhood, and caregiver Ashley Armstead of Helping Hands most recently. She also received the support and kind professionalism of Amy Lilenfield of Summit County's Developmental Disabilities.

Julia attended Woodridge Local Schools. Woodridge protected her during her seizures when necessary, challenged her when able, and prepared her for work she loved: summer jobs serving residents at the Village at St. Edward and inputting data for Coleman Professional; interning as a clerk at the Summit County Juvenile Court; and starting her final year of vocational training through Summa Health's Project Search. Julia enjoyed friendships from a lifetime of summer camps at Rotary and Camp Christopher; bowling at Legend Lanes; tap dancing at Studio West; and recent performances with Broadway Buddies. She didn't miss a Tribe game unless absolutely necessary, counting pitchers Trevor Bauer and Andrew Miller among her secret friends. But mostly, Julia deeply enjoyed the loving attentions and torments of her older siblings.

Julia was pre-deceased by grandparents, Robert and Marjorie Slocum and Leonard and Nellie Bertsch; uncle, Leonard Bertsch, Jr. (Allison), cousin Sarah Bertsch, and aunt Sally Slocum, all of Akron. She is survived by her parents, and brother, John, of Peninsula; brother, Tim of Park City, Utah; and sister, Kathleen of Salt Lake City, Utah. Also surviving her are her father's siblings, Tom Slocum of Akron, Lynn Konarski (Mitch) of Bath and Nancy (Tim) Callahan of Bentleyville; and her mother's siblings, Nancy (Ed) Lynch of Fairport N.Y., Nellie Sai Om Shriver of Akron, Susan Cull of Columbus, Janet Offutt of New Canaan, Conn. and David (Jan) Bertsch of Akron. Julia leaves a large clan of cousins and their children. Last, but definitely not least, Julia is survived by her best school chums, Dan Gardner and Abdullah Adams, and her very best girlfriend, Anna Biondo.

Julia's family gives special thanks to Nurse Lori True; Special Ed Teacher, Megan Zimmerman; and Drs. Tanya Kurtz, Chinasa Nwankwo and Sharon Schmahl. Her family suggests that any donations be directed to Akron Children's Palliative Care, Rotary Camp, Camp Christopher (CYO), or Woodridge Local Schools Special Education.

A celebration of Julia's life will be held on Saturday, September 15 at 11:30 a.m., at Sarah's Vineyard, 1204 W Steels Corners Rd., in Cuyahoga Falls.
