Michael Thomas Patrick Murphy Obituary
Michael Thomas Patrick Murphy

11/19/1946--9/09/2018

Michael Thomas Patrick Murphy, one of the most Irish people ever, passed away after being diagnosed with glioblastoma in June 2017. Mike graduated from St. Vincent High School in 1964 after attending all 12 years there. His friendships from school and from the neighborhood where he grew up were lifelong. Mike loved to play golf at Good Park and Turkeyfoot, and in 1982 he hit a golf ball off the Great Wall of China after winning the trip from Occidental Life as a top sales person. Occidental Life awarded him the top honor achievement award for 1979. Mike was involved in the Akron Life Underwriters Association for many years and was president in 1982. Later, Mike worked for Insured Plans where he created consortiums to reduce health costs for schools all over Ohio. Mike earned the Distinguished Sales and Marketing Award given by the Sales and Marketing Executives International in 1990. He opened the Golf Doctor Store in 1994 and made clubs and helped golfers improve their swings. Mike belonged to a fun friendship group called Gyro for many years. He also volunteered for Odyssey of the Mind and Destination Imagination Programs for 30 years. He retired as the Improv Challenge Master in 2016. Mike loved telling stories, jokes, and creating songs about his family and friends such as, "She Bought Generic Macaroni" and "Plastic Golf Shoes." He will be missed as the life of the party. His love of Irish history, especially "The Troubles," resulted in his writing a novel called "The Search for the Bachall Iosa." The High Holy Day (St. Patrick's Day) was for singing along to Irish bands, dancing Irish jigs, and having a wee bit of Jameson's with his many friends and family. Mike enjoyed fishing for musky with his son Tim in Canada and on Leesville Lake. His granddaughters Colleen and Bellamy brought him much joy.

Mike leaves behind his wife, Sally, of 37 years; son, Timothy Michael Murphy of Columbus, Ohio, daughter, Heather Murphy Gates (Robert) of Westerville, Ohio, and son, Ryan James Murphy (Jennifer) of Westerville, Ohio. He also leaves two granddaughters, Colleen Summer Gates (Heather and Robert) and Bellamy Grace Murphy (Ryan and Jennifer); sister, Patricia Murphy Bartoleit (Jose) of Wooster, OH; and sister-in-law, Phyllis Murphy (Terry) of Cincinnati, OH. The family thanks Mike's many friends for their incredible support, Dr. Herb and Jill Croft for helping us navigate through the medical maze, neighbors who went way beyond the call of duty, Clear Path Hospice (especially Anna DiFrangia), and the Challenge Golf Program. There will be no services.
