Ralph William Battles, age 91, died peacefully on Friday, August 30, 2013.
Ralph was born on November 1, 1921 in Akron, Ohio to Carl Cecil and Catherine Fredericka Steigner Battles. He was a 1939 graduate of South High School and a Navy veteran of World War II where he proudly served aboard the Howard F. Clark, destroyer escort. Ralph retired from Babcock and Wilcox after 44 years of service, progressing from draftsman to Project Scheduler. He enjoyed gardening, hiking, and family camping trips throughout the United States, appreciating the wonder and beauty of God's creation. A sports enthusiast, he played on many baseball and basketball teams where he met many of his lifelong friends.
Ralph was a member of Margaret Park Presbyterian Church for many years, serving as Clerk of Session and Superintendent of Sunday School. He later joined Northminster Presbyterian Church and was part of the men's 'Brown Baggers' group. With several close friends, he volunteered at the Akron Good Neighbors for many years.
Ralph was preceded in death by wife, Jeanette Jones Battles; brothers, Carl Hamlin and Robert Harold; sister, Doris Kathryn Dodge; and son-in-law, Barrie F. Bodden.
He is survived by wife, Lois; children, Rebecca Bodden, Mark Battles, Nancy (Ron) Capotosta, and Donna (Tod) Custer; his grandchildren, Barrie Bodden, Kelly Battles, Joseph (Amelia) Capotosta, Andrew Capotosta, Rachel Custer, Hannah Custer, Adrienne Capotosta and Caleb Custer.
The family wishes to thank the aides and nurses of Speret Hall and the Hospice Crossroads staff.
A memorial service will be held Friday, September 6th at 7 p.m. in Northminster Presbyterian Church, 104 Portage Trail Ext W, Cuyahoga Falls, OH 44223 (330) 928-8885.
The family will receive friends in the fellowship hall following the service. Interment will be at the Western Reserve National Cemetery in Rittman, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to Akron Good Neighbors, 1453 Goodyear Boulevard, Akron, OH 44305.
