Russell E. Ake

Russell E. Ake, 81, of Kent, died Thursday, January 29, 2009 at Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna from complications following open heart surgery.

He was born October 3, 1927, in Kent to Ralph E. and Katherine E. (Shader) Ake.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, June F. (Derry); son, Raymond E. (Cathy) of New London; daughters, Suzanne M. (Ronald) Cooper of Round Rock, Texas and Elizabeth K. (Carl Hamilton) Ake of Kent; four grandchildren, David (Gloria) Ake, Jason (Mary Lee) Ake, Ryan Hamilton, and Taylor Hamilton; three great-grandchildren; and sister, Lucille E. Frazer of Akron. He was preceded in death by mother, Katherine Ake; father, Ralph Ake; and sister, Frances Buzzell.

He was the owner and operator of The Print Shop in Kent from 1943 to 1989. He was an active member of The United Methodist Church of Kent serving on the Administrative Board, as Communion Steward for 20 years, as an usher and an active member of the Men's Work Group. He enjoyed playing golf and bridge with his many friends. Being an avid gardener, he was a member of the Garden Club of Kent and operated Ake's Christmas Tree Farm in Kent for 25 years.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 31 at The United Methodist Church of Kent, with Rev. Dr. David Palmer and Rev. Douglas Denton officiating. Visiting hours will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, January 30 at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial will be at Standing Rock Cemetery in Kent. In lieu of flowers, donations should be made to The United Methodist Church of Kent.
