Sybil Kriger (Winer, Kodish), age 93, of Canton and Akron, passed away Friday evening, June 19, 2009.
She was born on September 13, 1915 in Wheeling, W.Va., to the late Herman D. and Rachel Emerman. Sybil graduated from Canton McKinley High School in 1933 and Canton Actual Business College in 1936. She earned a B.A. degree in English and History from Kent State University in 1964 and a M.A. in Literature in 1967. She taught at Glenwood High School, Walsh College, and Akron University. Sybil belonged to Shaaray Torah Synagogue, where she taught Sunday school, was the synagogue librarian, served on the Executive Board as Secretary and as Adult Education Chairman. She was President of Shaaray Torah Sisterhood and President of the Ohio-Kentucky Branch of the Women's League for Conservative Judaism. She was Chairman of the Women's Division of the Jewish Welfare Fund, and served as both a Brownie and Girl Scout troop leader. She was a life-member of Canton Chapter of Hadassah. While living in Akron, she belonged to Beth El Congregation and the Women's City Club. She served as President of the Akron Chapter of Hadassah and as Treasurer of the Board of Central States Region of Hadassah.
Preceded in death by daughter, Donna Kriger; husbands Herschel Kriger, Ralph Winer and Lou Kodish; brother, Ted Emerman; sisters, Dorothy Kippen and Aline Kaye. She is survived by daughters, Susan (Martin) Spector and Raechelle (Len) Sherman. Six grandchildren, Deborah Harner, Rick (Lisa) Spector, Tammy (John) Li, Lori (Marc) Lavine, Todd Thedinga and Gabe Sherman; ten great-grandchildren, Nathan and Zachary Harner, Jared, Corey and Madison Spector, Jalen and Maya Li, Sierra, Bodhi and Alik Lavine; brother-in-law, Sam Kaye of California, and step-daughter, Becky Wilde.
Services will be held on Monday, June 22, 2009 at 11 a.m. in the Arnold Funeral Home, with Cantor Bruce Braun officiating. Interment in Canton Hebrew Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Shaaray Torah Synagogue following the burial. The Shiva period will be observed on Mon., Tues., and Wed. evenings at the home of Sue and Martin Spector in Akron. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Shaaray Torah Synagogue, 432-30th St. NW, Canton, OH 44709 or Hadassah, 2615 Olentangy Dr., Akron, OH 44333.
