Willie L. Burr Jr. "Billy" was born February 7, 1935 to the late Willie L. and Lucille Burr in Muskogee, Okla. He passed away unexpectedly March 1, 2013.
He received Christ and was baptized at the Mt. Calvary Baptist Church at an early age. He was the oldest of five children; the family moved to Akron in 1951. He graduated from South High School, where he excelled in sports. He was a track star. He holds the distinction of being possibly the only one from Akron who ran against "Jeep Davis." Immediately after graduation he enlisted in the United States Air Force. He had a long successful career and retired after 20 years. While he was in the Air Force he married his lovely bride, Gracie (Grant) Burr, in 1965. They had two children, April Burr- Ameen, and Adrian Burr. He also had a daughter, Janet Woods of Los Angeles, Calif., and son, Darrin F. Burr.
He worked for Chrysler Corporation and retired in 1992. Willie was an avid golfer and was also a member of Tire Town Golf Club. He taught many friends and relatives the game. He won countless tournaments. Willie Burr, who some called "Billy", was a no nonsense military man who did not tolerate laziness, and loved to help those who helped themselves. He was a family man and a great father, husband and provider, who will be truly missed by family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie L. Burr Sr. and mother Lucille Burr and granddaughter, Alea Burr.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife of 48 years, Gracie Burr; children, April Burr-Ameen, Adrian Burr, Janet Woods, and Darrin F. Burr; brothers, Robert H. (Gloria) Burr of Clement, N.J., Edmond R Burr (Geraldine ) of Albuquerque, N.M., Jerald T. Burr "Pete"; and caring sister, Rev. Marjorie F. Burr of Akron, Ohio; grandchildren, Rayon Burr, Cashé Moore, Ameen Stanley, Najiah Bedford, and Amir Bedford; nieces and nephews, Lisa Yancy, Edmond Burr Jr., Raymond Burr Sr., Germaine Burr, Vanessa Burr, and Robert Burr, Jr.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Service will be held Monday, March 11, 2013 at 12 p.m. at Mt. Lebanon Baptist Church, 180 Edward Ave., Akron, OH 44310, Rev. Marjorie F. Burr eulogizing and Rev. Shawnte Devon Hardin officiating. Interment at Ohio Western Reserve Cemetery. Friends may visit at the church from 11 a.m. until time of service. Procession will form and condolences may be sent to 993 Lawton St., Akron, OH 44320.
