Minister Herman Shoates

Minister Herman Shoates, 78, left this life suddenly to go home to be with the Lord on Sunday, March 30, 2014.

He was born in Macon, Ga. and came to Akron in the early 50's with his family, where they joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Herman graduated from East High School. He was on the track team and was one of the best middle and long distance runners in the state of Ohio. He was best known for the mile. Herman won numerous awards and trophies in track. He was employed by Chrysler Corp., and retired after 27 years of service. He was also involved in R.O.T.C.

Herman was a very giving and kind person. He loved helping others. Herman was loved by his family and friends and will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie Sr. and Mayberta Shoates; sisters, Dorothy Mae and Betty Jean Shoates; brothers, James E., David and Ernie Shoates. He leaves to cherish his memories, sisters, Lucile (Deacon Calvin) Thomas, Christine (Elder Jesse) Ruggs and Geraldine Townsend; brothers, Charlie Jr. (Lillie) Shoates, Deacon Robert (Roberta) Shoates, all of Akron, Ohio and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Funeral service will be held on Monday, April 7, 2014 at 1 p.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, 327 Cuyahoga St., Akron, Ohio 44310, Rev. Dr. Luther C. Cooper eulogizing. Interment at Glendale Cemetery. Friends may visit the church from noon until time of service. Procession and condolences may be sent to 769 Nome Ave., Akron Ohio 44320.
