Obituary Condolences

Leon Zakikian

Leon Zakikian, 88, passed away April 30, 2014, at the Harbor Health Assisted Living Center in Port Charlotte Florida, with his family by his side. He was born in Akron, Ohio on June 11, 1925 to the late Michael and Margaret Zakikian. Leon attended Garfield High School before enlisting in the U.S. Army in 1943, during World War II. He was with the 106th Infantry Regiment Company K and served in two Asiatic-Pacific theater battles, Okinawa and Death Valley battle of Saipan. Leon also served as a military police officer at the Imperial palace, Tokyo, Japan and was honorably discharged as a Military Police Sgt. in February 1946. Leon was the owner/operator of Zeke's Auto service from 1953 until 1975, when he retired and his son, David took ownership.

Leon was preceded in death by loving wife of 50 years, Irene; son, Michael; sister, Elizabeth; and many brothers and sisters-in-law from the large Birtalan family. He is survived by his loving son, David (Linda); grandsons, Frank (Ryan) of Green and Jamie (Holly) of Wadsworth; great-grandchildren, Ashley, Breighten, Zachary, Victoria, Jamie Jr. and Jordan; sister-in-law, Margret Maverich of N. Canton; cousin, Robert (Donna) Zakian of York, Maine, the BK bunch and many nieces, nephews and cousins that he loved.

Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2014 at the Schermesser Funeral Home, 600 E. Turkeyfoot Lake Rd., Akron, OH 44319 (SR 619). Family and friends may call on Saturday at the funeral home from 9 a.m. until time of service. Interment will be at Forest Hill Cemetery, Canton, Ohio, where VFW Post 3383 will perform military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made in Leon's name to the Ohio Parkinson's Foundation, Northeast Region, P.O. Box 271, Tallmadge, Ohio 44278-0721.
