Gael was an active volunteer throughout her life, working with League of Women Voters, Girl Scouts and the Wadsworth-Rittman Hospital Auxiliary. She and Bruce also led the junior high youth group at the Multi-Church in Mankato for several years.

Gael worked as an area coordinator for Peacepipe Girl Scout Council, taught developmental mathematics at Minnesota State University, Mankato and directed the Academic Learning Center at MSU. In 1989-1990, Gael received an Outstanding Faculty Award from the Student Ambassadors at MSU. She also served as President of the Faculty Association at MSU.
