Regina M. Alves (née Regina Maria Augusta Pacheco de Guimarães Nunes dos Santos, Fidalga de Casal-Bom)

Regina M. Alves passed away July 26, 2014 at the age of 96 at Akron General Visiting Nurse Service Hospice in Akron, Ohio.

Regina Maria was born in Lourenço Marques, Mozambique on January 12, 1918 to António Nunes dos Santos, Fidalgo de Casal-Bom and Maria Luiza Augusta Pacheco de Guimarães.

She was the head of the hematology department at the Institute of Medical Research in Mozambique and also honored as a conservator of the Institute's museum. Regina Maria was part of a team of doctors who traveled throughout Mozambique providing medical services, analyses, and treatment to indigenous people. She was renowned for her work researching hematozoa in tropical diseases such as malaria (paludismo), and some of her research and scientific drawings were placed on display at City Hall in Lourenço Marques. She retired after over 44 years of service.

With a strong, intelligent personality, Regina Maria was a very independent, kind, humble, and generous lady. She was an avid reader and traveler, and she loved playing tennis, painting, dancing, taking long walks, and flower gardening.

Regina Maria was married to her beloved husband, Carlos Rodrigues Alves (deceased), for 46 years.

She is survived by her daughter, Regina Tereza Alves-Parks in Akron; and her granddaughter, Johanna Regina Alves-Parks in California; in Portugal, her son, Carlos António dos Santos Alves; her grandson, Carlos António Alves (Sónia); and three great-grandsons, Carlos António, João Carlos, and Henrique Carlos. Regina Maria, known to her loved ones as Nininha, will be greatly missed by her family.

A private service and internment conducted by Gordon-Flury Memorial Home will take place on Monday at Holy Cross Cemetery in Akron. The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and staff at Akron General Medical, Akron General Visiting Nurse Service Hospice Care, and Gordon-Flury Memorial home for all of their kindnesses.
