Obituary Condolences

Henrietta Anderson

Henrietta Anderson, 83, ``Miss Tweet" as she was affectionately called, made her sudden eternal transition to glory on Monday, March 24th.

A pioneer in the community, she owned and operated for 39 years the first licensed Black Hair Care Salon in Portage County (Daniels' Beauty Shop, Kent Ohio). Born November 11, 1924 the third eldest of 13, she resided at 1200 Cedar Street in Kent. She graduated from Kent Public Schools and attended KSU for two years before graduating from Woodmere Beauty School in Cleveland, Ohio.

She was active in political, civic, community and church activities and served as Mother of the Church at Union Baptist in Kent. She was the last original member of Kent's historic First Baptist church that later united with Second Baptist to form Union Baptist Church shortly after the depression. These churches served as the basis of worship for black families who migrated from the rural south to work at the Erie Railroad shortly after World War 1.

At Union Baptist she also served as the church's Financial Recording secretary and was an alto in the senior choir until illness prohibited her regular participation. She was known as a "pillar in the community" that both black and white residents could come to for encouragement. She also liked to raise gardens and pick fresh greens when she was not vacationing. She liked to travel and visited Spain, Bermuda, Jamaica, Canada, Hawaii and Mexico.

Anderson served as a Republican precinct committeewoman and Portage County presiding judge for 50 years. She was also a member of the Eastern Stars of Evergreen Lodge No 101.

She was a lifetime member of the Portage County NAACP and in 1999 she received a proclamation from the City of Kent for community and civic service.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John J. Johnson and Dora Lewis Johnson and by husbands, Eli Daniels and the late councilman Ben Anderson; brothers, Byron Johnson, Charles Johnson and stepbrother, Farley Monet; sisters, Cornelia Hosea, Virginia Cardwell, Dolly Trimble, Hattie Hughes and Amy Blizzard. She leaves to rejoice in her homegoing celebration her only child, Doria Daniels of Kent; brothers, John (Stella) Johnson, Philip (Mary) Johnson, Norman (Vicki) Johnson, James (Theola) Johnson and William (Alberta) Johnson. She also leaves first cousins and four generations of nieces and nephews and a host of friends and surrogate children who adopted her as MOM's to celebrate in her homegoing.

Services will be held Wednesday, April 2, 2008 at 1 p.m. at the Union Baptist Church, Rev. Dr. Willie C. Watts officiating. Interment at Standing Rock Cemetery, Kent Ohio. Friends may visit at the church from 11 a.m. until time of service. Procession will form and condolences may be sent to 1200 Cedar St., Kent, OH 44240.
