Obituary Condolences

Ernest Howard Carlson, 76, of Brady Lake, died Saturday, November 13, 2010 at Select Specialty Hospital.

He was born December 23, 1933 in Seattle, Wash., to Ernest V. and Anna (Peterson) Carlson. He graduated from Ballard High School, Seattle, Wash., in 1952. He was an officer in the Air Force. He then received his BS in Geology in 1956 from the University of Washington, his MS in Geology from the University of Colorado in 1960 and his Ph.D. from McGill University in Montreal, Quebec in 1966. While working on his advanced degrees he worked as a government surveyor for the U.S. and Canada. Dr. Carlson was employed as an instructor of Geology at Villanova University in Philadelphia, from 1965-1966, then as an Associate Professor of Geology at Kent State University from 1966 until retirement in June 2009. He was a member and executive officer of Friends of Mineralogy Midwest Chapter. He was a Fellow in the Society of Economic Geologists, Association of Applied Geochemists, Geological Society of America and the Mineralogical Society of America. He authored the book Minerals of Ohio and their Locations, in 1991 as well as over 30 articles published in various scientific journals. Dr. Carlson also served on the Brady Lake Village Council from 1981 to 1993.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth (Adams) Carlson, whom he married on March 6, 1970; son, Christopher Carlson; daughter, Rosanna (husband, Phillip Peachock) Carlson; grandchildren, Lillith Carlson, Cameron, Dylan and Alexis Peachock.

Calling hours will be held 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Saturday, November 20th at Bissler & Sons Funeral Home in Kent, where funeral service will be held 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Memorial contributions may be made to Animal Protective League, 8122 Infirmary Road, Ravenna, OH 44266.
