Selena Lee Brown (lovingly known as Shirley), age 71, of Shreveport, Louisiana, went home to our Lord Tuesday, January 17, 2012, at her residence in Akron Ohio, after a battle with cancer.|
She was born September 13, 1940 to the parents of Mercy Lee and Judge Robert Horton who preceded her in death. Also preceding her in death, son, Jonathan L. Brown, (Johnny) two brothers, Robert (Rabbi), and Clyde Jr.(Judge), also one sister, Olivia Bridgewater.
Selena was born in Shreveport, Louisiana and was then moved with parents to Akron, Ohio, where she graduated and attended South High School. She married there and started her family. She migrated to the state of Massachusetts and that is where she raised all of her children. She worked varied jobs, and ended her career in Massachusetts at General Motors. She moved back to Akron to help assist with her sick mother.
Selena (Shirley) loved to play cards with family and friends alike, and Bingo was her all-time favorite pastime. You could find her at a Bingo Hall anywhere, in any state. She truly was a bingo and casino nut.
She is survived by her children; son, Darby Brown (Tony) of New London Conn.; four daughters, Seprina Brown of Akron and Boston, Michelle Brown, Theresa Brown, and Erica Brown all of Boston, Mass.; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, (granddaughters, Karen, Renee and Estella Brown who lived in Ohio with her). Also surviving are one sister, Lenora Woodard of Akron, Ohio; four brothers, Howard Horton of Boston, Mass., HL Horton of Akron, Ohio, Sandy Horton (Blue) of Boston, Mass., Charles Horton of Akron, Ohio; and Uncle Fred Johnson of Akron, Ohio. Host of nieces and nephews, The Woodard's, Varner's, Hudgen's, Boyd's, Bridgewater's, Watkin's. Hosts of friends and loved ones.
Services will be held on Tuesday, January 24, 2012 at 1 p.m. at Stewart & Calhoun Funeral Home, 529 W. Thornton St., Akron, OH 44307, Pastor J. Michael Martin officiating. Friends may visit the chapel from 12:30 p.m. until time of service.
