Melvin Blue, Sr. was born in Bullock County (Perote), Alabama, December 4, 1933, to Henry and Eula Blue. He departed this life on February 21, 2013, in Akron, Ohio.|
He attended Perote High School in Perote, Alabama. He was skilled as an athlete with a passion for playing basketball and baseball for which he received county wide recognition. He joined the U.S. Army at a young age and served in Germany where again his outstanding ability as a basketball player brought him to the attention of military authorities who selected him to play on the elite U.S. Army Official Basketball Team.
At an early age he joined the church and was baptized. Later in life, he was ordained a deacon at Mount Haven Baptist Church, Akron, Ohio.
For more than 30 years he worked at Goodyear Aerospace, retiring in 2003.
Melvin was preceded in death by his father and mother. He was married for 38 years to his loving and devoted wife, Margie Ann. Left to cherish his memories are five children: Melvin Jr., Marcus, John, Tonya, Joan (Robert) and eight grandchildren and his sidekick, Rufus the Shihtzu. Also, he leaves behind sisters, Susie Walker of Akron, Ohio, Odessa (John) Toliver of Hyattsville, Md., Trudie Adeoye of Opa-Locka, Fla., Helen Blue of College Park, Ga., and Ethel Ponder of East Point, Ga., and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Services are Friday, March 1, 2013, at Mount Haven Baptist Church, 545 Noble Avenue, Akron, Ohio, 44320, with Pastor Richard Cash officiating. Calling hours will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., with service immediately following. Procession will form at 1046 Himelright Blvd., Akron, OH 44320. Burial immediately following at Western Reserve Cemetery.
