Walter David Atchison, 82, of Hudson, passed away peacefully on April 6th surrounded by family, after a brief battle with cancer. |
Born March 19th, 1931 in Detroit, Michigan to James and Zella Atchison (Beecher), Walter graduated from John Marshall High School in Cleveland. Walter joined the ROTC at the University of Michigan in 1949 and served as lieutenant commander and pilot in the Naval Reserves for 18 years. Walter graduated from Michigan in 1957 with a B.S. in mechanical engineering and an MBA. He was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
Walter is survived by his brother, Arthur Atchison (Pat); daughter, Susan Gaspar (Robert); son, Scott Atchison (Claire); son, David Atchison (Tina); daughter, Cathy Galat (Jim); nine grandchildren; and companion for over 16 years, Judith Chase. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jim Atchison (Jennifer); sister, Aida; wife, Sally (Ginn); daughter, Lynn, and son Robert.
Walter's 40 successful years in the steel industry culminated with Hanna Mining and afforded him the opportunity to travel and create many lifelong friends. An avid golfer, tennis player, and skier, Walter enjoyed nothing more than time spent with his family. Walter was always a welcoming energy, bringing life and wit to every gathering, and will be missed by all who were fortunate to enjoy his company.
A Memorial Service will be held at The Spiritual Life Society, 1 E. Main St., Hudson, Ohio (The Old Church on the Green), Thursday, April 11, 2013 at 3 p.m. The family will receive friends Wednesday, April 10, 2013 from 5 to 8 p.m. at JOHNSON-ROMITO FUNERAL HOME, 19 E.
