Long-time area advertising and public relations executive, George A. Mentzer, died Saturday, April 13, 2013 at his home at the age of 85.|
A native of Lima, Ohio, Mentzer was a graduate of Lima Central High School and Ohio University where he received his BS in Journalism degree. While at OU, he was a member of Theta Chi fraternity and Sigma Delta Chi journalism society.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II with overseas service in the Philippines.
His entire career was spent in Northeast Ohio where he served in management positions in the rubber, chemical, plastics, fluid power, and materials industries.
He was an active member of the Akron Jaycees and a founding member of the Buckeye Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. Mentzer was a member of the Cleveland Advertising Club and a past president of the Cleveland Advertising Golf Association. Advertising campaigns for which he was responsible garnered dozens of national and area awards. He retired in 1990 from ASM International.
Preceded in death by his parents and his daughter, Christine Ducra, he is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Marianne; his son, David of Akron; son-in-law, David Ducra of Lenoir, N.C.; cousins, Carol Elsasser and Philip Hamilton, both of Kenton, Ohio; a number of nieces and a nephew.
Cremation has taken place. Per his request, there will be no memorial service. Should anyone wish, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Greater Akron (7996 Darrow Road, Twinsburg, OH 44087) or to The Arc of Summit County (3869 Darrow Road Suite 109, Stow, OH 44224).
