William F. "Doc" Helmkamp, age 92, passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on Saturday, August 17, 2013.
He was a lifelong resident of Akron graduating from Buchtel High School in 1939. He served in the Army during World War II fighting in the Battle of the Bulge. In 1946, he married the love of his life, Elizabeth Murphy. He earned his college degree from The University of Akron in 1949 and worked for Firestone T & R Co., retiring in 1982. He personally designed and built a home on Cinnamon Lake, enjoyed projects around the house while helping others with their projects. As a dedicated family man, camping trips with close friends were one of the cherished traditions each year. Doc enjoyed the company of family and friends enjoying a drink and the lively conversation that followed. A lifetime member of St. Sebastian, he was a Eucharistic minister, hunger center volunteer and worked in the rectory. He was a man of integrity who was kind and generous to all.
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; six children, Catherine Helmkamp, William (Deb) Helmkamp, Christopher (Zivile) Helmkamp, James (Jill) Helmkamp, Thomas Helmkamp and John Helmkamp; many grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
