Eleanor Vock Obituary

Eleanor Shannon Vocke

Eleanor Shannon Vocke, 94, passed away Dec. 14, 2013, in Dallas, Texas where she lived since 2008.

She was born August 28, 1919 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to Rose Malarkey and James Shannon, Eleanor spent her young years in Brooklyn, New York.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, George Howard "Howie"; and sons, James and Thomas. She is survived by son, Michael of Geneva, Switzerland; Ann DiPlacido of Arlington, Virginia, Barbara Keady Shannon of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, and Jane Dalton (Michael) of Dallas, Texas in addition to her cherished seven grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Eleanor met Howie while attending St. Johns University in New York where she graduated with a degree in economics in 1941. Following graduation they married and began their loving marriage in Akron, Ohio where Howie had accepted an engineering position with Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. Howie played basketball for the Goodyear Wingfoots as well as St. Johns - Eleanor was his biggest fan.

Eleanor was an avid volunteer with many organizations at her church, her children's schools and Navy wives as well as a former member and president of the Women's Board of St. Thomas Hospital. She enjoyed writing their newsletter for many years.

Eleanor will always be remembered for her Irish heritage, wonderful sense of humor, her passionate devotion to the rosary, her novenas and the special intentions of others along with her unconditional love for her family and friends. And who will ever forget those beautiful blue eyes!

Eleanor Shannon will be held out as an outstanding role-model to all whose lives she touched. She was the finest daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and the best friend forever to those she loved.

Our mother was never one to have people mourn at her passing. She always said, "I have had a wonderful life and cannot wait to be united with God."

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, January 7th, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. Sebastian Catholic Church, 476 Mull Ave., Akron, Ohio. Visitation with the family will be at 10 a.m. at the church prior to the service. Interment at Holy Cross Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in memory of Eleanor to Porto Charities Inc. of Arlington, Va., a nonprofit dedicated to assisting people with developmental and intellectual disabilities. To the entire Vocke family,
We were saddened to hear of your Mothers passing. She was a lovely woman and dear friend to my parents and entire family. I always remember her as on of my Mothers girlfriends who they all deferred to with questions of manners and proper English. She is reunited in heaven with her love, Howie!
On behalf of the Burke clan, we extend our condolences.
