Melinda Jane Hertler

Melinda Jane Hertler, age 49 of North Canton, Ohio, passed away Saturday morning in Mercy Medical Center, where she was surrounded by family and friends.

Born in Canton, Ohio, on January 6, 1958, Melinda was a 1976 graduate of North Canton Hoover High School. She earned both her Bachelor's Degree in Education and her MBA from Ashland University, where she was a member of Delta Zeta sorority. Melinda began her career as an instructor at Hammel College, where she was named Teacher of the Year in 1988. She also taught at other institutions, including Akron Institute and Walsh University. She enjoyed many years of employment with Summa Health System in Akron and the Cleveland Clinic Foundation. A member of the International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP), Melinda served as president of its Tire Town chapter (2000-2001). She was also a member of the Association of Residency Coordinators in Surgery, serving as secretary (2001-2003). She was past secretary of the North Canton Hoover High School Alumni Association and a volunteer for the Ohio Reads Tutoring Program. Melinda enjoyed attending high school sporting events, especially North Canton Hoover football games. She will always be their Number One fan! She loved reading and cross stitching, watching movies, attending musicals and theatre productions. She was a generous person whose contagious laugh could always be heard when spending time with family and friends.

Preceded in death by her dear mother, Nancy Hertler in 1997; survivors include her loving father, Donald Hertler Sr. and stepmother Shirley Hertler, of North Canton; sisters and brothers-n-law, Becky and Steve Volkmann of Hilliard, Ohio, and Susie and Tom VanVranken of North Canton; brother, Don Hertler Jr. (Heather Maxwell) of North Canton; nephews, Jon and Ben VanVranken; niece, Emily Volkmann; long-time companion, Frank Wingrove and his sons Frank III, Matt and Greg; uncle and aunt, Jim and Jean Hertler; uncle, Bill and Bev Hertler; numerous cousins; and many dear friends.

Calling hours will be held at Reed Funeral Home North Canton Chapel, 801 Pittsburg Ave. NW, North Canton on Monday (TODAY) from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral services will be Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Zion Lutheran Church of North Canton, 349 Lindy Lane, with Pastors Mark Sherwindt and Brian Nutt officiating.
