FRED JOHN KING Obituary
KING, FRED JOHN: 1923 - 2016. Fred John King of Kaleden passed away on August 30, 2016 at age 93. He spent his last days at Moog & Friends Hospice. His daughter, Margot was at his bedside when he died. Fred was born in Kaleden on June 11, 1923, the fifth child of Billy and Annie King. He left Kaleden during World War II to serve in the RCAF in India and Britain. He was diagnosed with tuberculosis after returning to Canada. It was in a sanatorium near Kamloops that he met and fell in love with Audrey Browne. They were married in 1948 and settled in Kaleden. Fred worked as an orchardist, postmaster and manager of the provincial crop insurance program. He admired John Diefenbaker and decided to enter politics in 1978. With the help of campaign manager Milton Cook, Fred won elections in 1979, 1980 and 1984. In Ottawa he represented the cause of BC farmers and constituents in the South Okanagan and Similkameen. He was honoured to be elected chair of NATO's human rights commission and he worked actively on behalf of Jewish dissidents in the Soviet Union. King returned to life in Kaleden in 1988 building a new home overlooking Skaha Lake. Carey Theological College awarded Fred King an honourary doctorate in 2016. His speech, read by his granddaughter, Tara King, emphasized the value of community service. It concluded with his favourite scripture that promises that nothing can separate us from the love of God. Fred lost his beloved wife Audrey in 2013. He is survived by three children, Gordon, Margot and Cathie; eight grandchildren, MacKenzie, Riley, Trione, Joshua, Jordan, Tara, Lucas and Tasha and eleven great grandchildren. A celebration of life service will be announced at a later time. Fred's family expresses gratitude to the nurses and staff of Moog & Friends Hospice in caring for him over the past days.
