CHERIE COBB Obituary

July 22, 1932 - January 15, 2013 OKLAHOMA CITY If Cherie was in charge of this obit. she would have made it - like a lady's skirt - - long enough to cover the subject and short enough to keep it interesting. She had 80 years to work on it, and all told, she spent her time well. Not that she got it right every time, but she gave it her all, and when the time comes to tell the tale of any life, that is all that really matters. Her mother Esther probably shaped more of her young character than any other family member, and despite a fractious family life otherwise, she became a rugged individualist that would rather be poor than take grief for a living. Cherie was a volunteer by nature and liked people (SOME of them) and animals (ALL of them). If you were lucky enough to have known her, you always knew where you stood for better or worse. Her son Kevin was her pride and joy, and despite their differences, she loved him to her last breath. She loved big and lived a gigantic life: no fear in this gal! She sang and laughed, cried and then sang through the tears. Cherie married for love ... every time. Singer-songwriter, lover of travel, painter, artist and community organizer. If seeing the best in others is living life to the fullest, then she lived the hell out of it. A party celebrating her life and life in general will be held at her home Saturday, January 26th at 3 p.m., and all who knew and loved her are welcome. Come raise a glass and share a memory.

Not sure what to say?

I was heartbroken when I discovered that Cherie had passed away earlier this year. Cherie was a loving, giving, caring lady but she was also tough, fearless, and funny! I especially loved her witty songs. One thing is certain - the world is a less fun place without Cherie in it. I am so very thankful to have known her.

Several years ago Cherie lived around the corner from my elderly father. She was always so good to him, including him in her neighborhood parties, etc. He got such a kick out of her! When Dad passed away, I became a neighbor. We viewed the Murray bombing site together. After 9-11, she wrote a song and sung it for me in her sweet voice. We shared funny stories about our pets. There will never be one like Cherie.

I also met Cherie through OSCA and later she joined my little circle of songwriters (Oklahoma Songwriter's Circle). I loved her wit, her voice, her honesty, her big heart. I always told her I wanted to be just like her when I grew up (lol). I sure will miss her. A couple friends from our songwriter's circle would like to come to the celebration, but do not know the address. If someone could share that, you can email me at [email protected].

Cherie, we've missed you the last few years, and it's been too easy for life to get away with us, but it seems death has a way of catching us up. Sweet music of the spheres is now your chorus. I'll listen for your voice!

I knew Cherie breifly in the 1990s through our mutual association with the Oklahoma Songwriters and Composers Association. I still remember a couple of her songs very fondly, but more than that, I remember a gracious lady with a great sense of humor. My thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

I worked with Cherie many many years ago in the Credit Card Division of Liberty Bank. I will always remember her wonderful laugh and her positive attitude.
