BOB MITCHELL

May 16, 1931 - Oct 26, 2012 SALLISAW Dr. Bob Gunter Mitchell, 81, died October 26, 2012, at his home in Sallisaw. He was a medical doctor, nursing home owner, and a Methodist. He was born to Okla Gunter and Sam L. Mitchell on May 16, 1931. He graduated from Sallisaw High in 1949 and from University of Oklahoma Medical School in 1956. He was a family practitioner and served on the board and helped make improvements to Sequoyah Memorial Hospital. In his love for the elderly, he was a pioneer in the development of nursing homes across Oklahoma, Arkansas and Texas, and was still active in the business. He had a passion for horses and built Sunlight Farms for his breeding and racing operation of both quarter horses and thoroughbreds. He served on the OU Board of Regents from 1972 to 1979. During his term on board, he helped in the growth of the Health Sciences Center and the hiring of legendary Coach Barry Switzer. He still loved to attend the Sooner games. He is survived by two daughters, Angela M. Tabor and Dr. Marcinda Mitchell; two sons, Dr. Mike Mitchell and wife Kathy, and Kelly Mitchell and wife Dana; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and companion, Ruby Brown. His funeral was held October 30, with burial at Sallisaw Cemetery.
