JO STURM

July 24, 1929 - Sept 2, 2013 OKLAHOMA CITY Jo Ellen Sturm, 84, passed away quietly at her son's home on September 2, 2013, in Shawnee, Oklahoma, with her children nearby. She was born July 24, 1929, in Oklahoma City to parents, Alvin B. and Lila "Tiny" Gober Smith. She graduated from Central High School and married Merle E. "Bud" Sturm, of Fort Cobb, Oklahoma, on June 16, 1949. Bud was a member of the U.S. Air Force with stations in Great Falls, Montana; Enid, Oklahoma; Japan and France. They had three children, Merle E. "Bud" Jr.; Robert Lee, who died at birth; and Debra Kay. Jo Ellen was widowed at the age of 38 and never remarried, always putting the needs of her children first. After the death of her husband, she returned to the workforce as a civilian purchasing agent at Tinker Air Force Base and the Veterans Hospital in Oklahoma City. At the time of her retirement, she lived in Oklahoma City, residing for a short time in Sand Springs and Shawnee, but in her heart, her home was Oklahoma City. She was a devoted Christian, most recently attending Cherokee Hills Church of Christ. She adored animals and had many dogs and cats over her lifetime. Her last surviving dog, Skipper, lives with her daughter but remained Jo Ellen's dog until the end. She was also preceded in death by immediate family members: parents, Bruce and Tiny; her beloved brother, Jim; and other family members, Joe and Elva Gober, Herbert and Edith Gober, Ruth Gober Goldstein and husband Hy, Clarence and Myrtle Sturm, Betty Sturm Smith, Bill Sturm, Lyndell Warren, Cherie Warren (nee), and Denise Warren (nee). She is survived by children, Bud Sturm and Debbie Coleman and husband Joe; Doris Warren and son, Lyndell Warren, Jr.; Sue and Richard Drake and son, Kevin; Bruce "B.C." and Sue Smith; Rhonda and Bob Balsey; Steven Drake; Masie Smith; Earlene Blum; Kelly Thayer; Joyce Bippes; Sue Higgins; Cheryl Moulder; and Charlotte Gober. She is also survived by dear friends, Jeanette Ball and Susie Rodman Best. Special thanks to Carter Hospice and especially Naifeh "Anna" Carpenter, who provided many hours of care and love to Mom. Memorial service will be held at Demuth Funeral Home Chapel, 1145 W. Britton Road, on Friday, September 6, 2013, at 11 a.m.
