Nov. 14, 1935 - May 7, 2012 OKLAHOMA CITY Helen L. Spaan passed away May 7, 2012. She was born Nov. 14, 1935, in Oklahoma City, to Louis and Mabel Strauch. She grew up in Oklahoma City, graduating from Classen High School. She attended Stephens College in Missouri before returning to Oklahoma City to marry Gary Spaan on July 6, 1955. She served her family as a homemaker as they lived in several places that Gary's job took them, spending much of their time in Texas. Following his retirement, they returned to Oklahoma City. She became active at St. John's Episcopal Church and more recently at St. James Anglican Church. She was also involved in her high school graduating class reunions. However, her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Gary, and daughter, Kelle. Survivors include two sons, Mike and his wife Julie of OKC, and Patrick and wife Bobbie of Mustang; two sisters, Frances Heath of Amarillo, TX, and Mickie Brown of OKC; six grandchildren, Jason Spaan, Steven Spaan, Leslie Hamby, Michael Spaan, Zoe Spaan, and Shelby Vakilzedh; 5 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The memorial service will be celebrated at St. James Anglican Church, 204 SW 104th Street, on Friday, May 11, 2012 at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in Helen's memory to: Integris Foundations, Southwest Medical Center, 3030 NW Expressway, Suite 1600, Oklahoma City, OK 73112.
