Smith, Jr.Aug 8, 1942 - Sept 12, 2012 OKLAHOMA CITY Bob was born in Providence, RI to Robert & Sophie Smith. After graduating from high school, he served the next 20 years in the Navy aboard multiple submarines. In 1979, while stationed in Charleston, SC, Bob met and married his wife, Cindy. He was awarded the Navy Achievement Medal in 1980 for his superior performance serving as Operations Officer and Navigator on the USS Von Steuben, a Poseidon FBM submarine. After retiring from the Navy as a Lieutenant Commander, Bob was immediately hired by Northrop as a Program Manager. His work on the navigation system for the B-2 Bomber was so rewarding that he followed the program to Oklahoma City, where he retired in 2005 after 23 years with the company. Bob was a proud graduate of Auburn University. War Eagle! His favorite hobbies were politics, genealogy and hockey. Although watching his team, the Los Angeles Kings, win the Stanley Cup was a great joy, his greatest joy was coaching his son, Billy, in youth hockey. His family would like to express deep gratitude to the friends who were always there for him and all of the doctors and nurses on the oncology floor of Southwest Medical Hospital. Because of their love and care, Bob considered them all family throughout his struggle with cancer. Survivors include his mother, Sophie; wife Cindy; children, Bobby and wife Gerri, Jeff, Jenny and husband Chris, and Billy; grandchildren, Robert, Callie, Brice, and Kinnon; and sisters, Roxanne, Rebecca, and Rhonda. Memorial service will be held 4 p.m. Tuesday, September 18th at Wesley UMC, 1401 NW 25th Street, Oklahoma City, OK 73106. Private burial will be held at Rose Hill Burial Park.
