JANET EDWARDS Obituary
April 17, 1933 - October 11, 2012 OKLAHOMA CITY Janet Love Edwards was born on April 17, 1933 in Oklahoma City, OK. A lifelong resident of Oklahoma City, she attended Edgemere Elementary, Harding Junior High, and Classen High School, where she graduated in 1951. Janet attended Bradford Junior College in Massachusetts and graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1955. She was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. After graduation, Janet worked in Oklahoma City, where she met John T. Edwards, a handsome attorney her mother brought to her attention. They were married on September 22, 1959 and enjoyed 52 years as husband and wife. Janet was a member of the Chickasaw Nation. Her parents, Pattye Love Hayes and Coleman H. Hayes were from southern Oklahoma, and her family is from a long line of prominent Chickasaw citizens. Love County, Oklahoma is named for her Chickasaw ancestors. Janet's young adult life was focused on family and community. The Edwards' were early homeowners in the Quail Creek residential neighborhood, and joined the Quail Creek Golf and Country Club upon moving into the area in 1963. They remained residents almost fifty years. Janet was involved in the establishment of the Quail Creek Elementary parents organization in 1967, volunteering as a classroom aide, a cafeteria worker, and the "crosswalk lady". School carnivals, summer swim teams, Girl Scout outings, holiday parades, field trips, sports, ballet, riding and other activities were made possible by her commitment to her children and youth. Janet was a people person who enjoyed the gift of gab. She made a special point of kissing the Blarney Stone in Ireland at age 65 to ensure she never lost her skills. More than one voter at Northpark Mall probably wondered why it took so long to get a ballot during elections. The answer lies in the fact that Janet Edwards was precinct supervisor and she made a point to personally know and talk to every voter! She was a member of many volunteer and social clubs, including the Junior League of Oklahoma City, Coterie Club, the Mayfair Dance Club, The Knit Club, Sewing and Book clubs. She was a member of the Oklahoma Zoological Society and the Bizzell Library Society. She supported many causes including the Humane Society, the World Wildlife Fund, and the American Cancer Society. She was a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Janet's love of people manifested itself in her career choice as well. She was in sales for several established Oklahoma City businesses, including B.C. Clark Jewelers, and the Cellar Wine and Spirits. Her husband was heard to complain that Janet always spent more money where she worked than she earned. She also engaged in her own nonprofit cottage industry-knitting. Friend and stranger alike could count on being given an admired knitted dishcloth or scrubber. Lucky babies received a knitted bunny blanket. Her knitting skills were quite remarkable. Janet enjoyed dance, taking ballet classes well into her fifties, and was an avid aerobics, yoga and pilates student. One memorable performance was her Classen High School reunion dance troupe. She had a big heart, a unique sense of humor, and an unconditional love for people and animals. She cherished time with family and friends, and created many fond memories in her well lived life. Janet is preceded in death by her husband, John T. Edwards, and her parents. She is survived by daughters Shannon L. Edwards of Edmond, OK, and Holly H. Edwards of St. Petersburg, Florida. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to area animal shelters, the Oklahoma Zoological Society or the American . A memorial service will be 3 p.m., Tuesday, October 16, 2012, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4400 N. Shartel, Oklahoma City.
