July 28, 1916 - June 14, 2013 WEWOKA Funeral services for longtime Wewoka, Oklahoma, resident, Joan Roberts Ligon, will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First United Methodist Church in Wewoka. Mrs. Ligon passed away at Mercy Hospital, Oklahoma City, on June 14, 2013, at the age of 96 years, following a brief illness. Chaplin Bill Hesse, of Canterbury United Methodist Church, Oklahoma City, will officiate, and the Reverend Susan Rice, of First United Methodist Church, Wewoka, will assist. Interment will follow at Oakwood Cemetery under the direction of Stout-Phillips Funeral Home in Wewoka. Mrs. Ligon was bon on July 28, 1916, in EI Reno, Oklahoma, to Richard Joel Roberts and Eva Stone Roberts. She graduated from Wewoka High School in 1932. She attended William Woods College in Fulton, Missouri, and received her Bachelor of Arts Degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, in 1936. She received her Teacher's certification from East Central State College in Ada, Oklahoma, in 1938; she received a Master's degree in History from the University of Oklahoma. She married H.M. Ligon on June 12, 1940, in Wewoka, and they made their home there. She taught English and literature in junior and senior high school throughout her teaching career. During her childhood in Wewoka, she was a member of the First Baptist Church; and later as an adult, she was an active member of the First Methodist Church. Mrs. Ligon taught Sunday school at the Methodist Church and was an adult sponsor for the Methodist Youth Fellowship. She also served as a member of the Board of Trustees at the First Methodist Church. Other lifetime achievements and associations during the years included being an officer of the American Association of University Women on several occasions. She recently received a SO-year service pin for her service. Mrs. Ligon was a founding member of the Seminole Nation Museum and Historical Society in 1973 and was a member of its Board of Directors. She belonged to the Hyacinth Unit of the Wewoka Garden Club; the Oklahoma Heritage Association; Town Hall, Oklahoma City; P.E.O.; the American Association of University Women; and the Oklahoma Historical Society, Oklahoma City. Mrs. Ligon was preceded in death by her parents; her two brothers; and her husband of 31 years, H. M. Ligon. She is survived by two children, Duke R. Ligon (his wife, Linda), Oklahoma City; and Nan Holt (her husband, Charles), Denver, CO. Her grandchildren include: Christian R. Ligon, New York; Jud Holt, Oakland, CA; Rachel Olson, Denver, CO; and Emily Holt, Sandy, UT; and great-grandchildren: Owen & Wrenn Holt, Emmett & Amber Olson, Miles & Adelyn Miller. Other surviving members of her immediate family are: Mary and Wendell Knox, Oklahoma City; Lovell and Bud Wingate, Arlington, TX; Corrine Roberts, Dallas, Arlington, TX; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Pallbearers will be Jud Holt, Christian Ligon, Andy Roberts, Phil Roberts, Ritchie Roberts, Steve Knox, David Knox, and Charlie Holt. Honorary pallbearers will be Tipton J. Burch, John Smart, Richard Elwanger, Fred Smith, Rudy Hargrave, John Norman, Richard Norman, and George Butner. Following the interment, a reception will be held at 3:30 p.m. at the Seminole Nation Museum in Joan's honor.
