Kenneth Bohan Obituary

Kenneth Earl Bohan, M.D., 88, died on September 3, 2007 in Houston, TX. He was born November 7, 1918 in Medford, OK, the son of Jeremiah and Etta (Fitzgerald) Bohan. Ken graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a B.S. and earned his M.D. from the University of Tennessee Medical School. He served as a Captain in the U.S. Army. After his honorable discharge, Ken began practice as a pediatrician in Oklahoma City where he served children and their parents for the next 50 years. In 1950, he married Cecilia (Laufersweiler) Bohan and they spent the next 55 years together in loving support and mutual admiration. Ken was a truly dedicated physician. His office had standing hours seven days a week, supporting his belief that no child should go a moment longer than was absolutely necessary without treatment. This made him a favorite with worried moms throughout OKC. On his one afternoon off each week, he served as an associate Professor at the O.U. Medical School where he enjoyed the camaraderie of the medical community. In addition, he was an active member of the A.M.A., the Oklahoma County Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics and the Irish American Pediatric Society. On a personal note, he was a long-standing member of Christ the King Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. His wife, Cecilia; parents; a sister, Florence Bohan; and two brothers, Walter and Francis Bohan, preceded him in death. He is survived by his son, Kenneth J. Bohan of Houston, TX; several nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Department of Pediatrics, OU Medical School, 940 N.E. 13th, Room 2B2308, Oklahoma City, OK 73104. A Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:00 A.M., Sat., Sept. 8, 2007, at Christ the King Catholic Church, 8005 Dorset Drive. Interment will follow in Resurrection Memorial Cemetery. Dr Bohan took care of me and my 6 siblings and went on to caring for our children as well. He was such a very kind man and took his job very seriously. He had a great bedside manner to help us kids feel safe.
My family was just talking about how great he was. I then had a flashback of this wonderful candy he gave us after seeing him. It was so fresh and it had a perfect light crunch when you chew it.
I hope someone reads this and can tell me what kind of candy that was and where he got it. Please email me at [email protected] if you know what candy that was.
God bless you, Dr Bohan and your family and staff for helping us!

Dr. Bohan provided medical care to the children in our whole family and several close friends. But he provided more than that. He provided loving care and support to the children and to us parents. He was the best of the best and is remembered with fond memories and gratitude. Our prayers are with his family.

My Mom called me to tell me of Dr. Bohans passing.
He was my Dr. from my birth in 1954 and my childrens doctor. Dr. James Pitts had told my Mom that he was the best and he was.

Dr. Bohan was the pediatrician for myself and my sister and brother from birth to 18. I also remember him coming into the room with the shot hidden behind his back and the nurse counting to make it easier. And of course the candy as a reward. He truely cared for each of his patients. He was a wonderful doctor and person and will be greatly missed. He does however leave an everlasting legacy in all of his greatful patients and their parents.
I now live in England and received this link from my sister in Oklahoma. My prayers are with his family.

I worked for Dr. and Mrs. Bohan for 18 years and they were so sweet and kind to me all those years. I appreciate their loyalty to me and I miss them. I was just told of Dr. Bohan's death today and was sorry I missed his service.

Dr. Bohan was my pediatrician from birth to 18. He was a wonderful man and doctor he will be missed. If a shot was ever the treatment he would come in the room with the injection behind his back and the nurse would count with you to keep your mind off the shot. You always knew no matter what the treatment was Dr. Bohan would always give you a candy stick making everything better. If there was a need after hours or on the weekend you knew Dr. Bohan was a phone call away. If I was having a hard time breathing Dr. Bohan would tell my mom to put me up to the phone so he could listen to me breath. He was truly a one of a kind physician. May his family find peace and comfort in knowing what a great doctor he was and knowing how many families he touched with the excellent care he provided.

God blessed our family when we met Dr. Bohan in 1974. He treated all four of our children and our girls wouldn't even consider going to anyone else. Dr. Bohan grieved with us at the death of our 3 year old son from meningitis. Even though our child was at the OU Medical Center, Dr. Bohan was there to check on him several times a day and would always take the time to help us understand what was happening. He was a part of the best times of our life at the birth of children and the worst with the death of our son. There will never be another doctor or man like him. We love you, Dr. Bohan.

Dr. Bohan was the pediatrician for both of my children from the time they were born until we moved away from Oklahoma City when they were 10 and 12 years of age. He was the best and most caring doctor we have ever had and we will never forget him. Our sympathy goes out to his family in his loss.

Dr. Bohan was my doctor when I was small and I praise God he was all 3 of my children's doctor as well. He was the only doctor that I knew that you could call in the middle of the night and he would answer himself. My first child's first Christmas was spent at Dr. Bohan's office. We have truly lost a great physician. May his family have peace in knowing what a great man he was.

I know God was waiting with open arms to greet Dr. Bohan, saying "A job well done good and faithful servant!"

What a blessing he was to us as a very young couple as he cared for our four sons. The boys loved his gentle hand and slow, patient manner. The fact that we always knew we could call and be worked into see him was so special. It was very easy to recommend his care to all our friends.

May his family find comfort in knowing that he touched so many people with his professionalism and caring ways as to leave a wonderful legacy of love from extended 'families'.

May he rest in God's loving peace.

Sandy & John Arledge and families.

How many times did we take our 6 children to Dr. Bohan! He always treated them as precious children who needed his care and attention. We were always grateful that they fitted us in at the spur of the moment when they were so sick, esp. on the week-end. Our prayers are with him and the family. We never knew he was a Catholic-we just knew he was a very good man. Our 2nd oldest child is now called Fr. Joseph Arledge, who is currently pastor of Prince of Peace Church in Altus, OK. He said he will certainly keep him in his prayers and offer a special Mass for him.
One of the things that I remember most (and the Kids, too) is that when they needed a shot, Dr.Bohan would have the syringe behind his back and give it to them before they knew what was happening! I was always grateful that he gave the shots. May God bless him forever!

Thank you Dr. Bohan for the caring of my sister and I. From toddler to teen, you were always there in the late hours of the night to the early hours of the morning to offer your kind bedside manner and gentle skills as a physician. All those are blessed who called you doctor.

Prayers to the family and friends of Dr. Bohan, he will be greatly missed.

The families of Gladys & Troy Littlejohn, Bill & Arleva Littlejohn & Eddie and Pauline Littlejohn send heart-felt condolences to the Bohan family. Dr. Bohan was pediatrician to my sister, me and my 5 cousins, plus some of their children. Even though we now range in age from late 40's to mid 50's, we all recall how kind and caring Dr. Bohan was to each of us (and the candy). My Mother recalled how he was always willing to come into the office to see us -no matter the day or time. Thank you for sharing Dr. Bohan with us. As my mother said, he was one of a kind! My name is Chirs Okeke, and Dr. Bohan served as my pediatrician until I was 18. He also helped in my delivery as a newborn. I have very fond and happy memories of visiting Dr. Bohan in his clinic for multiple childhood ailments and illnesses, although I had an enormous phobia of receiving shots! I remember it used to take a nurse, as well as one of my parents, to assist Dr. Bohan in giving me shots. I will always be very gracious for the wonderful care I received from him and his staff throughout my childhood, and I most certainly can attribute my good health to the extraordinary treatment and medical attention of Dr. Bohan. May he Rest in Peace.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you. Dr. Bohan was in the delivery room 45 years ago when I was born, he was a peditrician to both me and my sister, and then to my daughter after she was born. The most thoughtful, wonderful Dr ever to live. Great man

I can attest to the loving care that Dr. Bohan provided to his patients.... and to Moms. I was his patient as a child and he was my children's pediatrician. He was truly one of a kind in his availability and his sincere love for children. He is lovingly remembered by our family and we are grateful for his care and blessed for having known him.
