Aug 29, 1922 - May 17, 2014 DURANT W.O. "Bill" Young, Durant, passed away Saturday, May 17, 2014, at the age of 91. Bill was born Aug. 29, 1922, in Lone Grove, OK to Claude William Young and Mattie Lavada (Moore) Young. He graduated from Lone Grove High School and Southeastern Oklahoma State University. He married Ruth Cherokee Risner on Oct. 10, 1942, at the First Baptist Church in Ardmore. Bill proudly served his country in the United States Navy for 27 years, where he was honorably discharged as lieutenant commander. He was a veteran of WWII and the Korean War. Bill was the President of the Cherokee Telephone Company, which he founded in 1959. Through the years, Bill has been the president of the Chamber of Commerce two times, the Mayor of Durant, president of SODA, the President of the Oklahoma Telephone Association. He was also Director of the Oklahoma State Chamber of Commerce, Lions Club, Masonic Lodge, and a Shriner and was employed with OG&E from 1947 through 1959. Bill loved his family, golfing, ranching and flying his private plane. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ruth, on August 19, 2007; and eight brothers and sisters. Bill is survived by his son, James O. Young and wife Virginia, of Ardmore; two granddaughters, Amy Young, of Oklahoma City; and Jenny Sanchez and husband Samuel, of Mead; one grandson, Thomas W. Young and wife Camille Harp-Young, of Norman; one great-grandson, Gaius Sanchez, of Mead; and numerous other loving family and friends. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, 2014, at the First Baptist Church, Durant, with the Rev. James Robinson officiating. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Ardmore. Family hour will be 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at Brown's Funeral Service Chapel, Durant.
